标题: 请问各位SVO,doing一道题
Among  lower-paid workers, union members are less likely than nonunion members to be  enrolled in lower-end insurance plans imposing  stricter limits on medical services and requiring doctors to see more  patients, and spend less time with  each.

Dthat impose stricter limits on medical services and require doctors to see  more patients, spending

请问这道题的D选项:spending的逻辑主语不是应该是主干句的Subject所以是union members吗?可是为啥在这里是docters?

要理解句子的意思,这里的'spend less time with each‘是一个modifier,修饰的是医生,意思是医生会花更少的时间给病人看病,如果变成spending就修饰了union members,句子的意思变了而且不make logical sense。

其实就是这么回事:
1. When verb-ing modifier is separated from the clause using a comma, then this modifier modifies the preceding clause.
2. When verb-ing modifier is not separated from the clause using a comma, then it modifies the preceding noun.
3. When verb-ing modifier is placed in the beginning of the sentence followed by a comma, then it may modify either the subject of the clause or the entire clause, depending upon the context of the sentence.
4. Verb-ed modifier modifies the preceding noun or the noun phrase.
5. When verb-ed modifier is placed in the beginning of the clause followed by a comma, then it modifies the subject of the clause.

另外加一句,争对1的情况....Ron正好就这句话做了解释... ,Ving用来修饰preceding clause ,可不是说只能修饰谓语动词的action哦...非谓语动词也可以.楼上的就是例子 doctors to see  more patients, ... ,spending是修饰action "to see" 同时doctor对于spending也完全符合逻辑。所以要根据实际情况判断

但针对1的情况,xxxx,ving也可能修饰preceding noun。

如The 32 species that make up the dolphin family are closely related to whales and in fact include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 feet long and is famous for its aggressive hunting pods.

(A)  include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 feet long and is

(B)  include the animal known as the killer whale, growing as big as 30 feet long and

(C)  include the animal known as the killer whale, growing up to 30 feet long and being

(D)  includes the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow as big as 30 feet long and is

(El includes the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 feet long and it is

正确答案是A。OG上对B的解释是,‘ambiguity,growing不知道指代killer whale还是32 species’,说明逗号+ving也可能修饰逗号前的名词。

实际上,我认为xxxxx,ving有很多种可能的用法,可以修饰preceding noun,preceding clause,nearest action或者主句的主语,在做题时应该先看别的绝对性错误,排除后再用ving修饰对象不明来判断剩下的选项

RON男神对于这一题里spending的逻辑主语的解释是:

in choice d, you could legitimately make a case that 'spending' could modify the entire huge clause about what insurance plans do, and is therefore ambiguous. however, that's the OA, so you've learned that this problem is ok in the eyes of the gmat people. if there's a rule that can be articulated here, it's probably something along the lines of 'participial modifier applies to nearest action'.

也就是说D确实是有争议的。
我看了一下全题:
Among lower-paid workers, union members are less likely than nonunion members to be enrolled in lower-end insurance plans imposing stricter limits on medical services and requiring doctors to see more patients, and spend less time with each.

A】imposing stricter limits on medical services and requiring doctors to see more patients, and spend

B】imposing stricter limits on medical services, requiring doctors to see more patients, and spending

C】that impose stricter limits on medical services, require doctors to see more patients, and spend

D】that impose stricter limits on medical services and require doctors to see more patients, spending

E】that impose stricter limits on medical services, requiring doctors to see more patients and spending

这一题正确选项就是D,impose和require平行,表示plans的两个动作;spending less time with each是doctor to see more patients的结果状语。
所以这三个动作的结构是 impose and require,spending.....

这里spending的修饰确实有点儿歧义,但已经在5个选项里最优了。
