Class Outline:
Remember Blockbuster, HMV and Kodak? These companies are no longer in business today. Watch manufacturers have seen their market decimated by cell phones, and nowadays, Sony and Microsoft are beating retailers by offering direct downloads of video games. These are all examples of disruptive innovation. During this session, we will examine the underlying market characteristics that explain how disruptive innovations put market leaders out of business. We will discuss early-stage mistakes that cause firms to dismiss disruptive innovations and introduce strategies that managers can use to identify, prepare, and defend against disruptive innovation.
