标题: OG 18 701 成分问题
701. The widely accepted big bang theory holds that the universe began in an explosive instant ten to twenty billion years ago and has been expanding ever since.
                                       

(A)  that the universe began in an explosive instant ten to twenty billion years ago and has been expanding

(B)  that the universe had begun in an explosive instant ten to twenty billion years ago and hadbeen expanding

(C)  that the beginning of the universe was an explosive instant ten to twenty billion years ago that has expanded

(D)  the beginning of the universe to have been an explosive instant ten to twenty billion years ago that is expanding

(E)  the universe to have begun in an explosive instant ten to twenty billion years ago and hasbeen expanding

答案A没问题 但是看了OG解析之后有了点困惑

1.C 选项 The relative clause that has expandeddescribes instant, which makes no sense.

似乎OG的意思是说 这里的that作instant的定语从句 可是如果是做noun modifer的话 就近原则不是应当修饰 twenty billion years ago 而且之前只看到过that可以跳跃成分指代 请问that也可以跳跃成分修饰吗?

2.D 选项 illogicallysuggests that beginning is expanding, not theuniverse.

这里根据OG的意思 that似乎又变成了代词 指代 beginning 可是结构上跟C选项明明一样 为什么却充当着不同的角色呢？

3.ten to twenty billion years ago 这里又是做什么成分呢？做 instant的noun modifier吗？

哈哈哈又看到你了，C选项和D选项的that都是来修饰instant，作为has expanded和is expanding的主语，我觉得题目中想要表示的是instant这个抽象名词的同位语解释它，而原句的句义不是这个instant瞬间在扩大，而是宇宙universe来进行这个动作。

还有that的话是可以跳跃成分修饰的，因为ten to twenty billion years ago是时间状语成分，而且后面expand的语义明显和这个不搭配，所以是可以跳跃修饰的，不过读懂句子表达意思这个也就不算考点会为难你啦~

感谢耐心解答 还有两个小问题 1. 这里that不能理解成代词的一个原因 可以理解成如果that是代词的话 这两句  the beginning of the universe was an explosive instant ten to twenty billion years ago // that(the universe) has expanded ever since 两句话就run-on 所以需要用comma+conjunction连接才可以 这么理解正确么？
2. ten to twenty billion years ago 如果是时间状语的话 为什么前面没有连词呢？还是省略了 感觉看起来好别扭 这里ten to twenty billion years ago是修饰 instant 还是began 呢？

NN好，想请教一下为什么that一定是修饰instant，而不可能是修饰the beginning呢？（OG的解释也说D选项illogicallysuggests that beginning is expanding, not theuniverse）我以为CD都有that既有可能修饰instant,又有可能修饰beginning的歧义。怎样理解呢？

嗯嗯，是修饰有问题，会产生歧义，我可能没表述清楚~就是说原句的expand指的是宇宙在膨胀扩大，而CD的话有指代问题，可能是指instant，也可能是说the beginning of，而且同时的话the beginning of的动作也不能是expand，instant亦是如此，怎么样搭配都是有问题的，所以不能选~我觉得是这个意思~

PS：考场上的话读完A选项知道句子想表达的意思和重心之后，再去看其他选项的话其实就能发现总是有些差强人意~个别修饰指代的使用会影响整体的理解，GMAT考察的是商科的思维严谨性，是书面用语，比如在拟定合同的时候如果存在这道题这样的指代修饰问题，就会有很大的影响，所以弄清意思之后注重语法点不会有歧义就好啦~~

啊啊啊我才看到你评论，没有点回复我都不知道你问了sorry sorry，看到楼下的同学提问才翻到

1、这个不是RUN-ON~~而是说that是定语从句来修饰前面的一个名词，而你看前面有两个符合语法的名词，先不从逻辑角度考虑，这两个分别是the beginning of和instant，指的是针对这两个用定语从句来进行补充说明句义，但是再从逻辑搭配角度来分析，明显the beginning of和instant这两个名词都是不能用扩张膨胀来形容动作的，所以可以排除掉。

2、其次你说的状语问题，我觉得是在表明这个宇宙爆炸的时间节点是在过去，起到一个过去时时态提示词的作用，是不用加介词的，我去给你翻几个例句~你就能明白啦~
eg：OG15 121. New theories propose that catastrophic impacts of asteroids and comets may have caused reversals in the Earth's magnetic field, the onset of ice ages, the splitting apart of continents 80 million years ago, and great volcanic eruptions.
eg：Prep Verbal-6 First discovered more than 30 years ago, Lina's sunbird, a four-and-a-half-inch animal found in the Philippines and resembling a hummingbird, has shimmering metallic colors on its head; a brilliant orange patch, bordered with red tufts, in the center of its breast; and a red eye.

第一点的话
that引导的定语从句 从语法上来说 是不是前面所有的名词都有可能呢?
(the beginning/the universe/instant/years)
知道介词短语中的名词不能做主语 但是被修饰的话应该也是可以的吧  

总之就是因为 虽然the universe也是可能之一 但是因为存在四种可能 所以存在不确定性不选 可以这么理解么
