the splitting apart of continents 为正确答案

continents that were split apart 我认为的答案，请问这里continents 不是和前后的名词并列吗？而且正确答案中一个名词后直接加时间不是很奇怪吗？

reversals，onset，eruptions都是动词性质的名词，都是abstract noun。而splitting作为和reversals，onset，eruptions同一性质的名词，从parallelism的角度说要比continent更好.

这句话的意思是XXX回给地球带来一些列的灾难，灾难有地球磁场的反转、冰河时代的来临、大陆板块的分裂、以及火山爆发。continents that were split apart的意思是分裂的大陆板块，前文的xxx显然不能引发大陆板块，换句话说这里实质上平行的是各种灾难，continents不能是灾难。
