194. Discrimination in wages paid in occupations that are predominantly male over the predonimantly female have given rise to substantial differentials between the wages of housepainters and secretaries and between teh wages of parking-lot attendants and library assistants.
A. paid in occupations that are predonminantly male over the predominantly female have
B. paid in occupations that are predominantly make over those that are predonminantly female have
C. that favors predominantly male occupations over the predominantly female have
D. that favros predonminatly male occupations over those that are predominantly female has
E. in predominantly male occupations over the predominantly female has
D中 that favros predonminatly male occupations 和that are predominantly female 不平行。
that favros predonminatly male occupations over those that are predominantly female has
over是属于favor sth over sth的固定搭配的。
1)favors用单数,表明修饰的是discriminaton而不是wages,没有修饰歧义;
2)由于predominantly是副词,决定了female是adj,因此those that are predominantly female没有所谓的occupations are female的歧义。
关于that are的省略:
的确,在定语从句中的that be通常要省略,以示简洁,但前提应该是没有歧义,假设D省略that are变成:that favros predonminatly male occupations over those predominantly female has,反而造成those与female谁修饰谁的问题(当然,有predominantly这个副词在,还是可以识别的),不如保留that are使语意清晰准确。
OG 2 A: an area that is about C' size, ETS的解释说A is wordy, since that is can be deleted without loss of clarity
可见ETS也强调了that be省略时的前提是without loss of clarity
