more quickly than 是比较两个事情
1 The eyes of the elephant seal adapt to darkness
2 Those (--the eyes) of any other animal (yet tested) do (--adapt)
为了避免简单重复，第2部分倒装，而且不重复谓语adapt， 变成
do those of any other animal

有一个问题想要请教您。
这里的it为什么可以指代elephant seal。elephant seal是eyes的修饰语，与主句不在同一层级，不可作为指代对象。比如OG18#734（老题）：
n ancient Thailand, much of the local artisans’ creative energy was expended for the creation of Buddha images and when they constructed and decorated the temples that enshrined them.
后面的they不可指代前面的local artisans，OG说it is unclear what they refers to.

你说的这个顾虑我同意，但是和你举的例题也不完全一样。这里of elephant seal 和 local artisans’ 不一样，我不清楚这个区别是否关键。你可以把例题整个贴上来讨论更方便。
这题看下5个选项，还是C最清楚，而且也不会有歧义，而其它答案都有问题。个人建议语法要灵活学习。如果我们重写这个句子，有什么更好写法吗？如果想简洁清楚表达这个意思，这样写基本最好，就应该正确了，因为语言是用来表达的。

多谢大佬！仔细看了一下我发出来的句子，如果能指代的范围扩宽的话，该句修饰部分有两个复数：artisans和images，此时用they指代会出现unclear的问题。it指代应该是一个优先指代的问题，而不是一个绝对规则。
这个说法也能支持本题的指代，it只有elephant seal一个可指代对象。
但新的问题来了：例句中they句意上只能够指artisans，不存在指代images的可能。那么unclear是只通过语法判断吗？

A中they, them表达太乱了
B 正确。they 这里指代Buddha images，很清楚。至于they这里指代Buddha images还是local artisans会否产生歧义，我认为不会。这样细微的地方我们最好放到GMAT考试范围内来衡量，而不是较真语法。这里也可以看到没有一个比B更好的选项，就说明GMAT里认可这里这种指代clear enough.我们考试时就按最佳选项选择就好了。没有必要太纠结。过于有争议的选项GMAT应该会先试探，然后如果有争议淘汰掉。我搜索逻辑和语法题是，时常看到有些题干一样，但选项更新过的题目。有时是变换，有时也可能是旧选项有一些小争议。个人猜测

万分感谢！我还看到一种说法，也能够解释这个例子，以及上面的例题。“带's的所有格形式不可以指代，而of的所有格形式可以指代”，能够满足GMAC的规则。
当然，选出来选项很简单，有别的更明显的错误或不恰当的地方。只是想要从正确选项中多挖掘一些东西。

翻了下书 Manhattan SC72 However, possessive nouns are actually adjectives, not nouns, and a noun modifier has to point to a noun.本质上所有格属于形容词而不再是名词
这里想请教下A选项 所谓的they指代不清是因为可能指代temples也可能指代images吗？

可是如果这样的话 为什么B不存在这个问题呢？

另外，that enshrined them 是定语从句，修饰the temples。这会使得temple变为enshrine的主语。在逻辑上，庙宇不能自己珍藏佛像，只能是在庙宇中，人类珍藏佛像。

哈哈，是的。代词的指代偏差一般放在最后考虑（但能够确定的代词指代单复数错误可以作为绝对错误），一般来说会考虑以下情况：指代对象是否在同一层级（例如主句的指代对象在从句等修饰语中），指代对象是否合乎逻辑，指代对象是否唯一。跨层级指代在同一层级没有形式和逻辑上符合的指代对象时可以接受，比如大象的那道题。同一层级有多个形式上符合但只有一个逻辑上符合时，也可以接受。当然，这些只是可以接受，但不一定正确，所以放在最后考虑。
