这句话什么意思。尤其是than is the continental United States。是什么和什么比较。

only此处应该是few的意思，这个only的意思few,用的次数也few

事实上，少数有这种法律的国家离赤道比美国离赤道远。

这个only如果不了解这个用法确实很难理解，感觉only总是和单数连用，我最初看这个句子的时候一看到only马上想到只得是us，结果看得晕乎乎的！

only是个干扰，可以象tqbiao那样认为是：few

所以结论得出：这些法律在美国的效率要低于离赤道远的国家的

only也可以翻译为"仅有"吧~~~世界上通行这个法规的仅有的几个国家.....

最合适有这样法律的国家）are farther from the equator than is the
continental united states. (than 连接划线部分进行比较，这些国家距离赤道比美国大陆距离赤道远)

is the continental united states 是比较中的倒装句式参见OG-117 B. This ... division has faced stiffer competition in its markets than has the chemicals division. )
