A professor at the university has taken a sabbatical to research on James Baldwin’s
books that Baldwin wrote in France while he was living there.

A. on James Baldwin’s books that Baldwin wrote in France while he was living
there
B. about the books James Baldwin wrote in France
C. into James Baldwin’s books written while in France
D. on the books of James Baldwin, written while he lived in France
E. the books James Baldwin wrote while he lived in France

A.      James Baldwin’s books that Baldwin wrote in…这个表达啰嗦,JB的书肯定是JB这个人写的,所以这个that从句的修饰没有必要,或者改为research on books that JB wrote in…
B.      Research后面只能接介词in,into,on,不能接about。这里需要注意的是the books thatJames Baldwin wrote in France,这里省略了一个that,因此这个that从句修饰的books做的是后面wrote in的宾语的,这个时候就能省。

When it comes to pronouns, just 3 questions:
1/ Is the meaning of the pronoun obvious in context?
2/ Is there a noun?
3/ Does the noun match the pronoun (in terms of singular/plural)?
If the answers are yes, yes, and yes, you win -- the pronoun is fine.

On the gmat, "pronoun ambiguity" is not really a thing.
Theoretically, if you were given a sentence in which it's genuinely impossible to tell the antecedent of a pronoun (e.g., "Sharon was talking to Lisa about her children"), then, sure. But GMAC hasn't done that yet.

(If your requirement for pronouns were that strict -- i.e., if you actually demanded that there be no other plural nouns in the entire sentence in order to use "they" correctly -- then pronouns would become almost impossible to use.)
