（OG1585）According to a recent poll, owningand living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of amajority of young adults, like that of earlier generations.

E as it was of earlier generations
Parallelism
This sentence compares a single goal sharedby generations. The second part of the sentence must have the same structure asthe first part: a clause with a subject and a verb. The phrase owning … land is the subject of thefirst clause; in the correct sentence, the pronoun it refers back to this phrase and is the subject of the secondclause. The first verb is alsoparallels the second verb was. Theprepositional phrases of a majority ofyoung adults and of earliergenerations are parallel and correct.

Like相关正确用法：
Theword like is the most commoncomparison marker.
E．g.

Like不能比较两个of结构。因为Like就近比，此处是adults和that比，而that指代goal不可比。

这题正确答案是E，上面是我自己写的结合OG的解释。
Question：
关键是对于这句：Like不能比较两个of结构。因为Like就近比，此处是adults和that比，而that指代goal不可比。感觉有点问题。我个人感觉两个of结构，a goal of a majority of young adults, like that of earlier generations.这里的that指代goal，两个goal平行也挺合适的。也没有哪本书明确指出Like不能比较两个of结构，有大神有什么依据拿出来说服一下小弟么？

我觉得不是like / of 的问题
句意：是“拥有独立住房是年轻人的目标，就像拥有独立住房是上一代的目标一样” （此题预示着我们的未来？人生代代无穷已，房价年年不相似？），换言之对比结构为X is a goal for YOUNG PEOPLE vs X is a goal for OLD PEOPLE. X是同一个东西（拥有独立住房），也就是说x like X不是逻辑表述（因为X是同一个东西）），而X is a goal for A, like X is a goal for B是错误结构因为like不能对比clause （X is a...like X is a）。由此延伸，X is a goal for A, as X is a goal for B 则ok. 因此，唯一正确的结构是E， X（owning a house）is a goal for young people, as X was for older people
A的问题是结构, X is a goal for B, like that of C (说的是B像是C的that，但不是that指啥)

As连接两个句子的比较，前后时态不一致，后面的be动词用was必须补出来。另外A,B选项中用that指代free standing house on its land 是不可以的。

B as that for earlier generations（as后不是完整句子）
C just as earlier generations did（just as A do, so B do 是固定搭配）
D as have earlier generations（as表示比较，应该加完整的句子）
E as it was of earlier generations（it指代goal，用was是因为前后时态不一样，一个是现在年轻人的目标，一个是以前几代人的目标）
翻译过来是：拥有和住在一个自己的自由的小房子里任然是大多数年轻人的目标，和前几代人的目标一样
至于你说的like和as。我做的题目中like都是加了简单名词，凡是那种后面结构超级复杂的都被排除了……as是要加一个完整的句子

不是的，曼哈顿语法书第五版中对Like有举例。
Like相关正确用法：
The word like is the most common comparison marker.
E．g.
Frank’s build,LIKE that of his brother, is broad and muscular.
Frank’s build,LIKE his brother’s, is broad and muscular.
上面的用法都是对的。

it指的不是那个东西。具体可以看看2楼。我觉得2楼说的是对的。
