但是曼哈顿语法中明确强调， do not use this or these in place of nouns. A sentence such as This is great is unacceptably vague to the GMAT. Also, do not use that or those in place of nouns, unless you modify that or those to make them new copies.
B选项中that明显没有被修饰啊，直接裸奔为that is the direction，为什么这个又是对的呢？

IMO, 语法规则都是为表达服务的。您上面所说的语法规则，如果是soft语法规则，则没有必要当作规律来使用了；如果您认为是铁律，那就必须要有可靠的出处，并且是被公认的。
具体说这道题，我想句意和句子各个elements的放置位置，您都很清楚。这里because后面需要一个原因状语对飓风为什么“先”从东到西的方向进行说明，必须用一个代词以避免重复使用“从东到西”，而要指代一种方向变化，显然只能用that，it一般指代物，并且如果用it，在本句中就会发生指代不清的问题。关键点是：that指代的不是东西南北某一个方向，而是一种方向变化。

你说的还真没看到。只是在自己笔记中，写着“this和these不能做代词，而this和these宾语就直接干死”

这道题当年OG16 第二题，我也是困惑了好久的，看了好多解释才觉得哦原来这样

没看语法的我很羞愧啊。
我解题思路这样的，看选项差异，有but有and有while什么的，那么句子逻辑关系肯定是一个考点，文章说一开始从东往西走，是风吹的方向，then 转向了higher，是有转折关系的，所以没有表示转折的、表示并列的顺承关系的就都干掉了。A里边at first begin重复了干掉。

谢谢，spings。也就是说在句子指代清晰，没有歧义，且也没有更好的选项可供选择的情况下，这几个代词是可以裸奔的。我不知道我的理解对吗，但是这对做题很不利啊，因为不能快速删除选项了。

首先还是要明白这些代词具体指代什么；其次你要快速排出错误选项要基于你对错误点的判断，明明不是错误的点，你非得要把它当成错误的排除。这还是一个基本功的问题啊。。。
