The best argument for the tenure system that protects professional employment in universities is that it allows veteran faculty to hire people smarter than they are and yet remain secure in the knowledge that unless they themselves are caught in an act of moral turpitude--a concept that in the present climate almost defies definition- the younger faculty cannot turn around and fire them. This is not true in industry.

对于不理解的词，有的时候我们可以通过语境来分析，就这道题来说，看见了破折号，又发现看不懂的词在破折号里面夹着，那么可以根据破折号的应用原理（解释说明或举例之前可能没有说清楚的内容）来小心推测一下词义

破折号前的句子： unless they themselves are caughtin an act of moral turpitude

这句话我们看到了 caught，moral，还有一个不认识（反正我是不认识）的词 turpitude。moral 道德，caught 抓住，后面这个不认识的紧跟moral，那肯定是道德的什么意思，那我才就是道德不好被抓住。

再看波折号后的句意：the younger faculty cannot turn around and fire them.

看到词：younger faculty，fire。这道题提到的对象就只有两个，veteran faculty 和 younger faculty，然后younger还fire，那肯定是老的干了不好的事。

现在再看破折号里的：a concept that in the present climate almost defies definition。

我们已知的词义 defy 违背挑衅，definition 定义，再加上根据前后句意的意思，对于defies definition可以理解为不好的行为打破了什么的界限或是定义。说白了就是：干了不好的事。

你看这样理解对不对。

准备GMAT, OG/PREP 07/08/12 最多加个曼哈顿就可以了。OG是神书，好好弄明白里面的每一道题比其他书里的强一百倍(但是不要看OG的解释，解释写的太戳了）--- 这是一个走过无数弯路的人的肺腑之言。

你翻译的好详细呀，其实我只是想知道defies definition的意思，不过看完你其他的翻译部分感觉更明白了。
受到你的启发后（defy，违背挑衅）我又重新去金山词霸查了查definition，发现还有”规定“的意思。这下就对了defy definition=违背法规。

这道题是陈向东的书上的一道题。他翻译的可不明白了。
其实你要是有兴趣可以出本书，我会买的

亲耐滴，看到你真好。

经过你这么一提醒，我才发觉我下的是 Powerscore LSAT Logical Reasoning Bible。
但是这位LZ说这个更全，530页，结果就是各种看不懂。。。
重新下了一本，是这个样子滴（见截图），300多页，你看看这个终于应该对了吧。

不过这道题是陈向东的，bible英文看得累就跑来看中文了。

你如果时间够我建议你看LSAT的那本，那本书经典全在里面。
时间不够GMAT Bible 也够了但是前提是要每个类型都弄明白了，去看OG吧，加油！不明白可以戳我

不敢当不敢当，只是一点小想法跟大神们比起来还差的远。

其实我刚看了楼下另一位同学的回答，说的很对，GMAT Bible是本好书，一定要看仔细。再加上是外国人写的更贴近外国出题者的思路，多看看那些，比中国人写的逻辑书会有更大的进步。中国人的逻辑书怎说呢，首先能出书的就是大神们或特牛的人，人家的思路首先就跟我们不太一样，所以有些题解释起来我们看的云里雾里的，这样会更让我们觉得CR好神秘，好难。所以，争取cr方面先紧着外国人的官方教材看
