Even though the costs of paying baseball players amounts to a sum greater than one half of the overall cost of operating a Major League Baseball team last year, Major League Baseball franchise owners were still willing to pay increasingly higher salaries to top players.

答案：C

比较amount的时候要用greater，是要很明确的指出是比较amount吗？因为感觉这里the costs of...也很明确的指出了是要比较amount呀

个人理解，希望有帮助。

这里的amount是动词，主语为前面的costs，因为根据主谓一致排除AB。more用于修饰不可数名词，greater修饰可数名词，后面one half of the overall cost 是不可数的，因此用more，选C不选E。D个人感觉除了greater外，顺序也不对，应该是amounted to a sum greater than... greater than引导后置定语修饰这个sum。

我们思路差不多。
greater通常是指程度的大小，这里明显是钱的比较，不太适合greater；在看句意，amount to sum greater than,变成了sum的程度和钱比较，不合逻辑。
