标题: 0G2017 语法求教
首先感谢大家能回答我的问题
Despite Japan's relative isolation from world trade at the time, the prolonged peace during the Tokugawa shogunate produced an almost explosive expansion of commerce.
A. Japan's relative isolation from world trade at the time, the prolonged peace during the Tokugawa shogunate
B. the relative isolation of Japan from world trade at the time and the Tokugawa shogune's prolonged peace, it
C. being relatively isolated from world trade at the time, the prolonged peace during Japan's Tokugawa shogunate
D. Japan's relative isolation from world trade at the time during the Tokugawa shogunate, prolonged peace
E. its relative isolation from world trade then, prolonged peace in Japan during the Tokugawa shogunate.

我不是很明白C哪里错了，难道前半句话不就是修饰peace的嘛？书后面的解释看不太懂
答案是A

Despite being没有这种用法吧，而且状语修饰的是主句主语peace也不合理

despite后面只能跟名词或者名词性短语，不能跟完整的句子

Despite being isolated，这里的being省略了主语，所以后面的主语要和being isolated相关。句子的主语是the peace, 显然不是being isolated动作的发出者或者被修饰对象

Despite, although不一定要加句子，加Ving或者Ved是对的，但是这个Ving或者Ved一定要是主语的修饰语，和主语有关系才行

楼上正解，C的致命错误是Logical predication，而despite + v-ing并不是错的，og中也出现过despite v-ing做opening modifier 的正确选项，所以不能用这个来排除

C选项的being需要格外注意其用法。

Being基本上很少出现在modifier中，在OG上我记得可以做主语。说being isolated... 作为modifier就多余了，being没有提供任何更多的信息，因为只用isolated意思就可以表达到位了。再者，如楼上几位所说，后一句的主语是peace，在这peace being isolated不合逻辑的。

在这里Being是表示passive voice, 是少数的几种Being的正确用法。如果去掉being，这句的意思明显发生变化，因此being并不是没有提供更多的信息。

诚然being在大多数选项中都是错误的，但也不能看到being就认为是错误的用法。

另外能否cite一下OG使用despite + present particle 的句子？多谢。

同意。SC重点还是考逻辑，这题主要是LP！
OG2017 718题的E选项就有despite being called a sea，答案解析也没说有错。

多谢提醒，楼上确实看的很细。但我仔细看了一下，这里应该说明GMAT里至少是不接受Despite being 这种用法的。（这里OE的解释没有太多的参考价值)

As Ron said: the correct use of "despite" is ...
despite + NOUN

that's it.
(the noun can have modifiers, of course.)

有大牛能解释一下为什么D不对吗？the Tokugawa shogunate不就是指的是time吗？为什么不能放在一块呢？

Desipite being verbed......, subject ......
这里一定要构成subject be verbed的关系才可以。
