It is unclear whether chimpanzees are unique among nonhuman species in their ability to le arn behaviors from one another, or if, when other animals are studied in as much depth, similar patterns would be found.

（A) if, when other animals are studied in as much depth, similar patterns would be found
(B) if other animals were studied with as much depth they would exhibit similar patterns
(C) would similar patterns be found in other animals if they were studied in as much depth
(D) whether similar patterns would be exhibited in other animals that were studied with as much depth
(E) whether other animals would exhibit similar patterns if they were studied in as much depth
这条题讨论的很多了，但是我觉得很多人都没有说到点子上，选e，但是我认为b更好，很多人反驳b说if不能引导表语从句，但是if从句可以理解为whether。。。or。。。or后面的小分句的条件从句，而且这样意思更加完整，因为只有这样我们才可以理解成“猩猩在非人类中有独特学习能力还是其他动物在研究到一定程度时也会出现同样的情况，还不清楚。如果是e这个选项明显翻译不出来这个意思

我在网上看过好多讨论了，大家都直接把ABC用if在GMAT只做如果讲排除了，上边这位楼主的帖子是11年发的但没有满意的答案，所以我才重新发一遍。
有人回复这个问题：or后面的东西是对前面内容的解释或定义。or相当于i.e.(in other words)
比如：
It is unclear whether it will rain tomorrow, or whether I need to take an umbrella tomorrow.
=It is unclear whether it will rain tomorrow or it is unclear whether I need to take an umbrella tomorrow.
or的前后是一个意思，只是为了读者更明白而换个方式表达一下。
B选项：
=It is unclear whether chimpanzees are unique among nonhuman species in their ability to learn behaviors from one another or it is unclear if other animals were studied with as much depth they would exhibit similar patterns
-->bad parallelism<1> 我觉得这里是whether A or whether B，而不是whether A or B。
<2> 前者whether A和whether B是同一个意思的不同说法，or相当于"换言之"。
比如：I will go out whether it is rainy, or whether I may get wet.
<3> 后者whether A or B表示"A或者B"
比如：I will go out whether it is rainy or sunny.
<4> 本题中or前后句子的意思是同一个意思的不同说法，而不是“或者”。

我能理解上边这位说的E选项前后同一个意思不同说法，但是B选项如果理解为whether只有大猩猩有某种能力or如果在更深入的研究下，其他动物也会表现出这种能力前后是相反的关系，也没用逻辑错误啊，if在B中不是当做“是否”而是“如果”不理解为什么B不对，求大家指教！

or后面和前面平行吧，对吧？首先if怎么和whether平行咱都不说了，你看前面whether的主语表达的什么“大猩猩是独特的什么。。。”；往后 if other animals were studied with as much depth they would exhibit similar patterns，是一个条件啊，意思是如果被研究，这些动物会怎么样，和前面大猩猩是什么样子的根本不是一个意思吧？

明白楼主的意思

但是楼主你再仔细想一下，前后并不是相反关系，而是两个完全相同的表述。

【whether chimpanzees are unique among nonhuman species in their ability to learn behaviors from one another】并不是陈述一个事实，而是陈述一个疑问，对这个问题有两种可能的回答：大猩猩是独一无二的或者大猩猩不是独一无二的

后面【whether similar patterns would be exhibited in other animals that were studied with as much depth】也是陈述一个疑问，也有两种可能的回答：其他动物也存在这种现象（对应大猩猩不是读一无二的）或者其他动物不存在这种现象（那么大猩猩是读一无二的）

恩恩谢谢你们！！我明白一些了，一是意思问题，二是平行， it is unclear wether.... or wether......, 是or连接的前后两个从句，如果是B的话第二个从句缺引导词，所以必须要wether
