OG review 2016 sentence correction #90
prices at the producer level are only 1.3 percent higher now than a year ago.
GMAC says this sentence is wrong because it illogically compares prices to time past.

but in the same section question number 104
the right answer is "heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year than last..."
almost same structure, but it turns out to be the right answer.

一直对GMAT上关于比较时的省略感到迷茫，终于找到一个相互矛盾的情况，我学艺不精无法理解，求大神指导，谢谢！

个人觉得：

prices at the producer level are only 1.3 percent higher now than that of a year ago. 对比的是今年和去年的价格

Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year than last year. 感觉是省略了they were , 补全是than they were last year，表示一种状态的可以省略，因为是be higher。

Ron解答中的举过了这么个简单的例子，LZ可以体会下：

i can lift more weight at the gym than my brother.
i can lift more weight at the gym than my brother can.
i can lift more weight at the gym than in my basement.

给你简化下错误的句子：Prices are higher than a year ago.
OG: the sentence makes an illogical comparison b/t prices at the producer level and a time period (a year ago).
它在拿价格与一个时间段在比。 a year ago 我们常说它是一个时间状语，但这个短语的中心词是 year，一个名词。比较对象不平行，绝对错误

正确：Prices at the producer level are only 1.3 percent higher now than THOSE OF a year ago.

大致意思：现在的价格比去年的价格高 1.3 个百分比。“去年的价格”中的“价格”是中心词，它不能省略，你可以写成 prices of a year ago 或者 those of a year ago, 要注意单复数一样。完美平行

2. Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year than LAST because......

你把它大声读一遍，念出来，你会发现你的惯性思维使你出错了。
than 后面是last year吗？不是它只是一个单名词 LAST。

last有名词属性。当名词时，前面可加the，也可不加。
last year 中的 last 是形容词。

简化： Heating-oil prices are higher than last. (分析的时候可不看 expected to be, 直接 are higher than）
OG: The sentence connects a comparison b/t this year's and last year's heating-oil prices.

它这里的 last 指的是 “去年的油价”。

或者你也可以这样想，than 介词后面一定要跟名词，由此可推断这里的 LAST 是个名词，也一定不是“去年”的意思，而是 “去年的油价”。

可能和第一次写的不太一样，第一次更简洁，但就这样吧，希望你能懂

我觉得你说的挺有道理的，结合你的指导我又看了一遍解释，its a comparison between this' year and last year's heating oil prices，那last指的应该就是price而不是year了，嗯嗯，谢谢大神！
