题目:
“In some countries, television and radio programs are carefully censored for offensive language and behavior. Inother countries, there is little or no censorship.”
In your view, to what extent should government or any other group be able to censor television or radio programs?Explain, giving relevant reasons and/or examples to support your position.
作文:
Like any other critical industries or communicationchannels that affect the large majority of population, television and radioprograms should receive a certain degree of government oversight and evencensorship. This is to ensure that no one can abuse these channels todistribute extreme idealism or pursue profits via legally or ethicallyquestionable means.
Given that most of such programs are for profit, itcan be reasonably expected that television and radio program managers will dowhatever is within their power to maximize profit. This might lead to the actof including offensive language and behavior in the programs to appeal tocertain group of viewers, especially teenagers, who might display higherinterest in borderline behaviors. With no government oversight or censorship inplace, the program runners’ decision on content is only regulated by thecode of ethics of the operating company, which owns the programs and benefits fromhigher profit. Historically speaking, privately owned enterprises are not the mosttrustworthy when it comes to decisions between profit and ethical conducts.
However, too much government censorship can be anissue as well. Since offensive language and behavior more or less exists in thereal world, some could argue that a complete censorship of such content wouldresult in an inaccurate representation of the reality. Moreover, it alsodepends on how such content is presented in the television and radio programs. Some documentary materials might include offensive language and behaviors in anacademic way. One could argue that censoring such content completely withoutother considerations is too extreme of a practice.
Television and radio programs play a very importantrole in a lot of people’s lives, being the major source of information andentertainment. Government should approach the topic of censorship verycarefully, knowing that certain degree of censorship is necessary to keepprivate enterprises’ profit seeking behavior at check, but too much censorshipwill not benefit the viewer either.
