尽管IT有点指代不清的嫌疑。但是，只是嫌疑，总体的逻辑意思比较清楚。

rather than前后满足平行结构前面是from the sun 后面必须是介词短语满足形式对称

A的平行可以这样理解：

两种产生热量方式的比较前面一个by后面不是产生热量的方式是生存的方式 from后面才是产生热量的方式选D

我又想了想，还是E比较好：意思是通过利用直接得自阳光的热量，而不是自身产生的热量，。。。

请指正。。。

觉得ethyl斑竹分析的有道理，我也转而支持E选项了。

instead of +noun.的用法还是比较常见的。尽管比rather than应用范围窄，且不太符合ets的偏好。偏好应该是相对的，不是绝对的。

支持E。

应该是A吧。
“by drawing their body heat directly from the Sun rather than burning calories to generate it”
这句话应该是这样理解的：
R这个东西吸收热量的来源是直接来自太阳（的能量），而不是燃烧卡路里来得到热量。
所以rather than后面的内容不是和吸收热量平行对称，而是和来自太阳对称。
