标题: OG16 T97 COMMA AND疑惑
The 19-year-old pianist and composer performed his most recent work all over Europe, Asia, and North America last year, winning prestigious awards in both London as well as Tokyo for his achievement at so young an age, and he is hoping to continue composing now that he has returned to Chicago.
A. winning prestigious awards in both London as well as Tokyo for his achievement at so young an age, and he is hoping
B. winning prestigious awards both in London and Tokyo for his achievement at such a young age, and hoping
C. having won prestigious awards both in London and Tokyo for his achievement at so young an age, hoping
D. winning prestigious awards in both London and Tokyo for his achievement at such a young age, and he hopes
E. having won prestigious awards both in London as well as Tokyo for his achievement at so young an age, and he hopes
关于B选项有些疑问。除了both and 的平行问题，OG上还说and hoping和前面的winning平行，造成时态上的语义错误。
关于这个“and hoping”，我的看法是“COMMA AND”后面应该接independent clause，显然hoping to continue...不是independent clause，所以错误。我这个看法对么？

COMMA AND后面是可以不跟independent clause么？什么情况下跟independent clause？什么情况下是OG说的这种平行呢？

句子内不加COMMA的and是否也可以即表示平行，又加independent clause呢？

首先，winning是在闡述說明前面的事情，
如果看Ｂ選項讓winning跟 hoping平行的話，
你自己讀一次看看，hoping是用來闡述前面整件事嗎？
顯然不是，所以Ｂ是錯的

是的，OG就是这么解释的，我明白这个。重点是想问下，用hopeing句不是independent clause是不是一个错误呢？
因为我看到这里的第一反应是independent clause问题，不是平行导致的语义逻辑错误问题

在gamt club上问了下，COMMA AND后加independent clause不是strict rule，也可以像本题这样表示平行。

It might be effective to distinguish two different applications of comma + and:

1. In a list: the usage is optional, but GMAT questions almost always have a comma.

Comma + and can be used for ANY list having three or more itmes.

I crossed the street, running, panting, and dodging the traffic..... Correct.
I crossed the street, running, panting and dodging the traffic...... Correct

2. to separate two independent clauses: the usage is mandatory.

I went home, and then I slept.... correct (two independent clauses are I went home and then I slept - comma is required)
I went home, then I slept... wrong
I went home and slept.... correct ( two verbs are added, not two clauses - comma is not to be used)
I went home, and slept..... wrong

B有个很明显的错误就是Both in，both应该和and 搭配啊

这道题目几乎可以算OG里最简单的平行题之一了……both and 平行呀！

COMMA AND后面是可以不跟independent clause么？

曼哈顿sentence structure章节里说：Twocomplete sentences can be connected using a comma plus a conjunction (such asbut) to create a compound sentence. (这里的conjuction就是说的FANBOYS）

什么情况下跟independent clause？

曼哈顿上说：Any GMAT answerchoice that connects two independent clauses via only a comma is incorrect.

什么情况下是OG说的这种平行呢？
这里的平行还应该考“both。。。and。。。”

关于comma and的用法跟lz有一样的疑惑
看到曼哈顿之前的版本chapter 10里面有专门说
Do not use a comma before and to separate two verbs that have the same subject. Either eliminate the comma or add a subject to the second verb, creating a second main clause. Wrong: Earl walked to school, and later ate his lunch. Right: Earl walked to school and later ate his lunch. Right: Earl walked to school, and he later ate his lunch.
但是最新的第六版这个被删掉了其他地方也没有看到有提出类似的说法

然后在OG17里面做了道题里面这个句子
At the end of 2001, motion picture industry representatives said that there were about a million copies of Hollywood movies available online, and that they expected piracy to increase as high-speed Internet connections became more widely available.
如果按曼哈顿原来版本的说法，我觉得那个comma是多余的，不应该加，如果加了后面就应该是完整的句子而不是that从句
但是这是正确答案所以我也confuse了
