On the GMAT, “when” is usually used to describe one situation that happens at the same time as another; the word is only rarely used as a relative pronoun. “When” should only be used as a relative pronoun when it introduces a relative clause that actually describes the time in question. For example:
The weeks when I was happy to watch TV all day are long gone.
An easy way to test whether “when” has correctly been used as a relative pronoun is to replace it with “in which.”
The above sentence would read:
The weeks in which I was happy to watch TV all day are long gone.
This construction makes sense. In the case of our GMAT question, however, replacing “when” with “in which” creates an illogical clause:
It was not until almost 1900 in which scholars and critics seriously began studying…

it was not until 1990 that固定搭配,意在强调某件事。

Although she had been known as an effective legislator first in the Texas Senate and later in the United States House of Representatives, not until Barbara Jordan’s participation in the hearings on the impeachment of President Richard Nixon in 1974 was she made a nationally recognized figure, as it was televised nationwide.
(A) later in the United States House of Representatives, not until Barbara Jordan’s participation in the hearings on the impeachment of President Richard Nixon in 1974 was she made a nationally recognized figure, as it was
(B) later in the United States House of Representatives, Barbara Jordan did not become a nationally recognized figure until 1974, when she participated in the hearings on the impeachment of President Richard Nixon, which were
(C) later in the Untied States House of Representatives, it was not until 1974 that Barbara Jordan became a nationally recognized figure, with her participation in the hearings on the impeachment of President Richard Nixon, which was
(D) then also later in the United States House of Representatives, not until 1974 did Barbara Jordan become a nationally recognized figure, as she participated in the hearings on the impeachment of President Richard Nixon, being
(E) then also later in the United States House of Representatives, Barbara Jordan did not become a nationally recognized figure until 1974, when she participated in the hearings on the impeachment of President Richard Nixon, which was

It was not until almost 1900 in which scholars and critics seriously began studying… It was not until...that...

it was not until 时间 that 主语 谓语 宾语
not until 时间 did/was/were 主语 谓语(原型) 宾语
主语 was/were/did not 谓语 宾语 until 时间
It was not until almost 1900 in which scholars and critics seriously began studying不合逻辑是因为in which用错了。

Although various eighteenth and nineteenth-century American poets had professed an interest in Native American poetry and had pretended to imitate Native American forms in their own works, until almost 1900,scholars and critics did not begin seriously to study traditional Native American poetry in native languages.
A) until almost 1900,scholars and critics did not begin seriously to study
B) until almost 1900 scholars and critics had not begun seriously studying
C) not until almost 1900 were scholars and critics to begin seriously to study
D) it was not almost until 1900 when scholars and critics began to seriously study
E) it was not until almost 1900 that scholars and critics seriously began studying
AB应该改成 scholars and critics did not begin serious to study until 1900
C应该改成not until 1900 did they begin to seriously study...
D中when错了应该是that

Though the artifacts of pre-columbian civilization created a stir from the very first European contacts with the new world in the sixteenth century, it was not until the later half of the nineteenth century that western designers, artists and crafters were inspired to imitate them.
(A)it was not until the later half of the nineteenth century that western designers, artists, and crafters were inspired to imitate them.
(B)they did not inspire imitations of western designers, artists, and crafters until it was the later half of the nineteenth century
(C)not until the later half of the nineteenth century was it that they have inspired western designers, artists ,and crafters to imitation
(D)until the later half of the nineteenth century western designers, artists ,and crafters have not been inspired to imitate
(E)they were not inspirations of western designers, artists, and crafters imitations until the later half of the nineteenth century
A是it was not until 时间,对了
B应该改成they were not inspired to imitate western designers, artists, and crafters until the later half of the nineteenth century
C是not until 时间,C应该改成not until the later half of the nineteenth century were they inspired to imitate
