请问这两个句子在语义上有什么区别呢，MANHATTAN中的解释我看不懂
什么the writer’s mental time frame is concurrent with was destoryed, the use of had built indicates that the writer is dipping back in time only for a moment to the building process.

过去完成时态是区分过去两个动作发生的先后。
had done在前，did发生在后。

当然大部分情况是这样的，还有一些是有时间标志的，比如by 1999，since last year。
