Verb form; Logical predication
This sentence explains a hypothetical situation and therefore calls for a conditional—or contrary- to-fact—construction, because in order to more accurately predict population, demographers would have to know more than they presently know. A present-tense verb is required to describe the current state of demographers' knowledge, and the comparison made by the sentence must be between current and conditional knowledge, not between knowledge and time of knowing (now).

A Wrong comparison—between knowledge and time (now); conditional verb is needed.
B Conditional verb is needed; economical is the wrong adjective.
C Economical is the wrong adjective.
D Correct. Conditional knowledge, indicated by would have to know, is correctly compared to current knowledge.
E Wrong comparison—between what demographers need to know and now.

E选项的解释比较错误，而非省略，但是OG13 SC65如下:也涉及到了类似的省略问题，却是没有比较错误。

C Correct. 这里的emergence 和 had previoulsy thought 省略了 than the time when they emerged 为什么这就不是错误比较呢。省略原则的边界在哪里呢？曼哈顿说以不引起歧义为准，那么对于42题的比较，正常人都知道比较的肯定不是Know和now呀，logically可以明显理解到省略了they do呀。求大神帮助分析一下comparison，省略判断的原则边界在哪里？

那是因为AB DE都错了

D：that which was错了,意思重了
E:that不能代指一段话
所以C对了。

OG明确地说了than previously thought 是对的而且是很简洁的。你记住就行。

有的时候一个选项被选择是因为剩下的选项里面有明显的错误

如你所说，我记住了than previously thought正确，但是问题在于不明白这种正确原理。
导致我以此类推，在做42题的时候认为than now也是正确的，结果做错了。
所以我爬上来想问问清楚，判断标准是啥？囧

我不是大神啊，
我也不明白previously thought, og说对我就记住了。

than now一般是时间比时间
比如说 last year than now
42说的是 a great deal more than now,那就不对了

你对42题E选项中比较对象的说法是对的，错的是OG解释，真心的，它错的地方多了。

比较结构中的省略，须满足两个条件：

1、不引起歧义。（曼哈顿里有很好的例句）

2、than右边省略的部分必须与左边对应部分完全一致。
42题中正确选项：would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economic
红色部分与蓝色部分时态不一致，所以蓝色部分（they do）不能省略。

这个解释真好，同意。
我想知道问什么OG65题中：scientists have gathered evidence suggesting that complex life-forms emerged much earlier than previously thought 这个省略是对的。
看起来，这里省略的左右内容也是不完全一致的。当然这道题本身其他选项也有明显缺陷值得排除掉。但是单就这个选项来看，如何评价呢？

比较结构中的previously thought真是朵奇葩，我把能找到的例句都粘给你，看看有什么启发！

OG16-SC48：Digging in sediments in northern China, scientists have gathered evidence suggesting that complex life-forms emerged much earlier than previously thought.

OG16-SC39：A surge in new home sales and a drop in weekly unemployment claims suggest that the economy might not be as weak as some analysts previously thought.

这三题中的previously结构的完整度是依此增加，而这三题的比较结构里也都是在比较主语。

只能说GMAC心太大了
