A recent poll of elected officials suggests that candidates, when in the midst of a tough campaign, often make statements about an opponent that they may not think is true.

这里为什么指代statements而不是opponent 无法理解

如果指代的是opponent，那我们把它代入定语从句：

they（candidates） may not think opponent is true。他们（候选人）不会认为对手是真的？

opponent是活生生的人，怎么不会是真的呢？显然如果划线部分用is，导致这句话不合逻辑。

该题唯一符合逻辑的组合就是：他们（候选人）不会认为声明（statements）是真的。因此谓语跟着statements走，用复数are。
