OG解释： D them seems to refer to tourists。
然而E也有这个问题啊！如OG指出的错误， 我认为是硬伤。既然同时出现在d/e 中，为何E就不模糊了呢？（当然d用cystallize 不与 growing 平行也可以删除）
另外， by tourists 介宾，应该是可以忽略不看的，我认为代词不会指代介宾短语里的词？

不建议看OG解释，有的时候很误导（应该是很大一部分情况下）。
E里面them也可能代指游客。them可能指所有前面的名词。OG应该负责任地在E里面说“them seems to refer to tourists”，但是OG没有这样做，这也是OG不好的地方。
判断对错应该看问题主要出在哪，这道题问题不是出在them上，而是平行和because of上。
D里面有语法缺陷：结晶和生长不平行。crystalize and growing
还有because问题：because of＋名词短语，最好是很短很短那种，太长了就算不好了。E里面because加句子，没问题。
所以啊综合分析
D：语法错误不平行硬伤+because of劣等+them不清晰
E：无语法硬伤+because使用完美+them不清晰
E肯定优于D
by tourist 是修饰词语，就是x修饰moisture的，可以直接删除，不会影响句子分析。

1、楼主你又一次找出了OG解释不严谨的地方。无数实例证明OG的解释水平很低，不足信。
2、代词指代对象问题
我认为GMAT唯一考核的代词指代知识点，就是“单复数”--即通过句意推测代词的指代对象，如果两者单复数不同，可以作为基本语法错误排除。
3、代词可以指代作介宾的名词
例：OG16-SC11：The intricate structure of the compound insect eye, with its（指代insect eye） hundreds of miniature eyes called ommatidia, helps explain why scientists have assumed that it（指代insect eye） evolved independently of the vertebrate eye.其他错误选项：
(B) having hundreds of miniature eyes that are called ommatidia, helps explain why scientists have assumed that they（单复数错，排除）
(C) with its hundreds of miniature eyes that are called ommatidia, helps explain scientists’ assuming that they（单复数错，排除）
