标题: 问一道PREP08中的题，关于指代用词they还是those

第241题中的补充说明中，有这样的一句：

1) they, their, it都是完整指代，即指代包含了被指对象的所有修饰成分

**注意仅仅是修饰词，如：

In Japan elderly peopleare treated with far greater respect than theyare in most Western countries.如果前面的elderly people没有其他修饰，后面时可以用they来指代的。

楼主不明白的是，一般来说they不是特指前文提到的那个名词吗，为什么不用those呢？感觉they有特指那群elderly people的意思，而those是泛指elderly people。

请各位指点！

這裡用they不會有歧意，因為前面的elderly people本來就是泛指（全世界的老人），不是特指。
In Japan擺句首，是用來修飾整句的。
如果前句改成「elderly people in Japan are treated with far greater respect..」（in Japan限定修飾elderly people，特指）
這時候就要寫成「elderly people are treated with far greater respect than are those in western countries.」

那原句In Japan elderly people...than they are in most Western countries.是否也可以写为 In Japan elderly people are treated with far greater respect than those in most Western countries. ？

您说得”如果前句改成「elderly people in Japan ...
這時候就要寫成「elderly people are ... than are those in western countries.」“ 这里those 前面的are能省略吗？
