29. “Too many people think only about getting results. The key to success, however, is to focus on the specific task at hand and not to worry about results.”

What do you think this piece of advice means, and do you think that it is, on the whole, worth following? Support your views with reasons and/or examples drawn from your own experience, observations, or reading.

One the one hand, the expected results, in other words, goals provide a motivational focus, a pathway to success. one of most basic premises of theories of motivation is that we, as humans, select goals that will satisfy our psychological or biological needs. Nowhere is this truer than in the achievement-based environment of sport and business. As we notice, nowadays goal setting has become such a mainstream activity in business and sport that you might be forgiven for wondering if it is worth covering at all. What’s more? As we progress along the path to success, the experience of achieving our goals can also influence a number of emotional states such as confidence or anxiety. These states, in turn, can affect performance in the process.

On the other hand, while outcome goals, it is equally important to ask ourselves “ How will I achieve that ?” The resulting answer will be highlighting our process which determining the final goals, since all the slight details in process can work together, and at last, accumulate to the whole picture which we longing for. It is not surprising argue that details are too inessential to need to pay attention at all. However, people who hold this attitude will taste the bitter result. Even if one can not learning experience from other’s failure that details are essentially important, one can deduce it from the scientific phenomenon: small errors make it impossible to predict the weather system with a high degree of accuracy. Why? The Butterfly Effect is the reason. For small pieces of weather—and to a global forecaster, small can mean thunderstorms and blizzards—any prediction deteriorates rapidly. Errors and uncertainties multiply, cascading upward through a chain of turbulent features, from dust devils and squalls to continent—size eddies that only satellites can see. According this striking example, we can see how the small details of process determining the final result and we can not dare to ignore the value of the process.
