标题: OG129新问题

129. In an effort to reduce their inventories, Italian vintners have cut prices; their wines have been priced to sell. and they are.

(A)              have been priced to sell, and they are

(B)              are priced to sell, and they have

(C)             are priced to sell, and they do

(D)             are being priced to sell, and have

(E)              had been priced to sell, and they have

In choice C, the best answer, do is correctly used in place of the full verb do sell; in this verb, do is a conjugated form and sell is in the infinitive form, corresponding to its previous use in the sentence (in the phrase priced to sell). In choice A, the omitted word is selling; in B, D, and E, it is sold. Neither of these forms corresponds properly to to sell earlier in the sentence. Also, in E, the past perfect had been priced signifies that the wines had been priced to sell before the prices were cut.

蓝字部份怎么解?

对红字部份不理解,这些形式与to sell不一致,那么do sell则to sell一致。不一致在哪,一致在哪?是时态的问题,还是动词形式或逻辑意思的问题?哪位可以解释一下?谢谢!

As you can see from below, only Choic C has got the right form.

(A) have been priced to sell, and they are selling

(B) are priced to sell, and they have sold

(C) are priced to sell, and they do sell

(D) are being priced to sell, and have sold

(E) had been priced to sell, and they have sold

Thank andrew_li!very much!

Sorry, I still don't understand why C is the only right form.  Could you give me a detail explanation?

And I have the other questions:

1.What does do is a conjugated form mean?

2.What does they in all the options refers to, the wintner or the wines? How to judge? From the logic or from the structure of the sentence?(Though some people have talk about it, but I still want to make sure.)

Thanks a lot for every response!

1.What does do is a conjugated form mean?

It means it's a 活用形式. In Choice C, do, an auxiliary verb, is used in conjunction with sell that is omitted. In English, sometimes the main verb can be omitted. For example, Do you live in London? Yes, I do (live in london).

2.What does they in all the options refers to, the wintner or the wines? How to judge? From the logic or from the structure of the sentence?(Though some people have talk about it, but I still want to make sure.)

They refers to their wines. How to judge? I am afraid there is no definite answer. At least not that I know of. Normally you should be able to tell, either by logic or from the structure of the sentence, what an pronoun refers to. If you can not find any suitable one, it probably means that the sentence is badly constructed.

Thanks andrew_li! a lot for answering my question so quickly and patiently!

I get sth from your response:

"They" refers to "their wines", we can judge that "they do (sell) "means that the wines are sold out.

I found several examples today, so I have a new idea. could you check for me?

sellv.tr.(及物动词):

The partners sell textiles.
合伙人经销纺织品

She sold her old bicycle to me.
她把她的旧自行车卖给了我。

v.intr.(不及物动词)

The new models of VCD sell like fun.
这些新型的VCD机销路好得不得了

an item that sells well.
销路很好的商品

Grapes are selling high this season.
在这个季节葡萄卖得很贵

So I think from the examples, the v.tr.(及物动词)sell is usually used to follow the subject that is the person, and the  v.intr.(不及物动词) sell is usually used to follow the subjest that is not the person but something.

From the Q129.

129. In an effort to reduce their inventories, Italian vintners have cut prices; their wines  are priced to sell, and they do.

I think the logic subject of the verb "to sell" is "Italian vintners ". So the sell is a v.tr.(及物动词). So I think the sell in "they do sell" is as the same as the sell in "to sell". So "they do sell" means "the Italian vintners do sell the wines out"

andrew_li!What is your opinion about what I talk above?

I don't know whether what I think is right, just open to discuss.

I feel very confuseing in Gmat SC,somethimes I don't know how to deal with it! Thank you for help!

In this case, sell is intransitive and it means "卖得好". For instance,

Your products simply do not sell. (你的产品就是卖不出去.)

On a seperate note, you should not worry too much about it. Do more exercises and you will get there. We are all here to help each other.

Thank andrew_li! for helping me! And thank all of you.

Do you, from that there is no object follow the "sell", judge that it is a intransitive?

It's so sorry that I ask you again.I know I should not focus on too many details.  Now I feel I have no enough time to do the preparing because I think it waste too much time.

Thanks a lot forandrew_li` suggestion"you should not worry too much about it. Do more exercises and you will get there. We are all here to help each other".

I always think  whether I should give up some questions of the OG and just remember the right answers of the questions. Should I do more exercises than focus on all the questions I meet.

I am so confusing and worrying about the preparing under way! Could you and the other editors give me more suggestion according to your exeperience.

Thanks a lot!

I can not really give you an accurate answer to how I can tell that sell is a transitive verb in this sentence. I've heard the similar phrases quite a lot of times in my daily life so I assume it's more by intuition.

And don't let me mislead you. You should definitely focus more on OG, by all means. Just answering all the questions without going back to check how you've done is certainly not a smart move. When I told you to "do more exercises", I meant to say "do more reading" in order to build up your English "sense".

Thank you very much! I think that the intuition you said is the right feeling to English. It needs more English foundation. Admire your English level! I don't know when I can reach a little as the same as you.

以下是引用andrew_li在2005-8-5 17:14:00的发言:

Thanks for your suggestion. I think you always do the well job, you didn't mislead me but help me. Thank you again for suggesting me to do more reading. It is the real section that I mostly worry about. And still don't know how to improve it and by what ways to improve it.  I think just read more like what you said. But the time is less. So difficult is it.

Anyway, thank your suggestion and ecouragment!

Good to you!

看了这么多还是不明白啊,为什么说B . D . E 与前面的to sell 不对应呢,为什么C 就对应了呢,C 也没有to 啊!
