标题: 求问-prep08的double用法的两道题!
1.The number of peopleflying first class on domestic flights rose sharply in 1990, doubling theincrease of the previous year.
A.    doubling the increase of
B.     doubling that of the increase in
C.    double as much as the increase of
D.    twice as many as the increase in   
E.     twice as many as the increase of

2.According to surveys by the National Institute on Drug Abuse,about 20 percent of young adults used cocaine in 1979, doubling thosereported in the 1977 survey.
(A) doubling those reported in the 1977 survey
(B) to double the number the1977 survey reported
(C) twice those the 1977 survey reported
(D) twice as much as those reported in the 1977survey
(E) twice the number reported in the 1977 survey

看prep08的时候,有一个关于double的重点题,求问一下
上面1题选A,然后我2题就选的也是相似结构的A,但2题正确答案是E,敢问A错哪儿了?
国外网站说those没有所指代,但我觉得A中those指代前面young adults,而E中number反而和前面young adults对不上了…(20%of young adults是一群人的合集还是指一个数?)

求大家指点~!

if you say "twice as many", then this construction should be paired with a countable noun.
e.g., twice as many dogs --> "dogs" is a countable noun

if you said "twice as much", then this construction should be paired with an uncountable noun.
e.g., twice as much water --> "water" is an uncountable noun

if the noun in question is already an explicitly numerical quantity, then you should use neither "much" nor "many". instead, you should just use "twice" or "double" by itself.
e.g., twice the increase --> "increase" is an explicitly numerical quantity

these rules are followed pretty closely.
so, for instance:
twice as much water --> correct, since "water" is an uncountable noun (but is not an explicitly numerical quantity)
twice the water... --> incorrect, since water is not a numerical quantity

twice as much as the increase... --> incorrect; redundant
twice the increase... --> correct

因此,针对你的问题, those可以指代adults没错,但adults不是一个具体的数量词,不可以叫adults自己加倍,而是它的数量加倍。

E选项twice the number.....twice作为副词修饰number这个数量词,不需要as much as。

看完你的回答,我发现我好像一直都对这种类型的题有认识上的误区。
我一直以为,这种题和unlike题型一样,number 和 number对应,人和人对应,同一性质和同一性质的对应。
原来这个倍数的问题好像是和前后性质搭配的问题没有那么大关系,主要是和double与twice后面紧挨着所修饰的词有关。
不知我是否理解到位了,感谢哈!

我之前跟你理解的也很类似, 不过我后来搜了ron关于这个知识点的一些解释,我个人的理解是:

double 作为动词的时候, sb/sth. double sth. 时,double后面跟的一定要是可量化的词语,如increase,quantity, weigth, number etc.   
如: The baby doubled its weight in one year ---correct;
        The baby double itself in one year ---incorrect (从逻辑上讲,baby自己double,那是克隆,语义不对)

而针对twice呢,我的理解是,如果有as many/much as这个结构在其中,那twice整个短语是应该作为同位语修饰一个非数量名次,那这个名词一定要在前文出现过,否则不成立。如果没有as much as这个结构,那我的理解是twice的功效和double一样,后面加数量名词,可以考虑作为一个独立主格看待。

仅仅是我个人的理解。。。。请大家指正。。

首先确定一点,比较的都是量的比较。

第一题,因为increase本来就有增量的意思,所以前面不用再加that,就重复了,加that of the increase的话,就成了增量的数量,这样redunctant。 increase自己就有量的意思。

第二题的A,double+1979年报道的人,这是非数字概念,错!
