The arguer’ main point of view worth consideration is that a nation’s advertisements can reflect its ideas. Although I agree that advertisement can not only be treat as commercial tools, I insist that whether we can get the ideas through that nation’s advertisements mainly depend on two factors: one is whether they are true ideas the advertisement show us, another one is whom the ideas represent.
On the first place, we should examine the whether the idea is a real one. Since the purpose of the merchants to advertise their products on TV, in newspaper and even everywhere they could find is obviously for hunting the profit, the ideas shown in advertisement solely serve to the product. Thus the advertisement may ,to a certain extend, distort the real idea of the society. For example, educator and doctor tell us that alcohol hurt our health while the producer of alcohol may over-maximum the benefits we get from drinking if there are some. Furthermore, the producer may invite some popular movie stars to represent the alcohol. And reason why the movie stars accept the invitation is only because the money producer paid to them is too attractive to be rejected. The more popular the movie star is, the more negative impact the advertisement will be to the public. From this aspect, we can easily conclude that not all the ideas shown in the advertisement are the real ideas that public hold.
On the second place, we should analysis whose ideas the advertisement want to tell us. Take IBM, the famous computer corporation of the world, for example, they use same advertisement in a certain time all over the world. The only difference is the translation of words to different language. Is it to say that different people from different country have exactly the same ideas? The answer is opposite. In other words, the ideas in advertisement just represent that of producer or the merchant not the public in certain area.
Admittedly, we really could extract some merits from advertisement such as attitude of the public toward art and the fashion although they are not the ideas. Moreover, some advertisement should be commend since there are story of love, friendship, loyalty, and commitment etc present in the advertisement. While we should use our own judgment to analysis the nature and the attributive characteristic.
From what has been discussed above, we can safely draw the conclusion that we can not obtain the ideas solely from nations’ advertisement. More deep investigation and more carefully consideration should be made about the peoples advertisement serve to and nature of the it.
