标题: 一道prep的指代问题，我想问题目是不是出得不严谨呢？

70. PREP07 的这一题

It isunclear whether chimpanzees are unique among nonhuman species in their ability to learnbehaviors from one another, or if, whenother animals are studied in as much depth, similar patterns would be found. (A) if, when other animals are studied inas much depth, similar patterns would be found (B) if other animals were studied with asmuch depth they would exhibit similar patterns(C) would similar patterns be found inother animals if they were studied in as much depth(D) whether similar patterns would beexhibited in other animals that were studied with as muchdepth(E) whether other animals would exhibitsimilar patterns if they were studied in as much depth

答案是选E，当然，我的疑惑是，题目未划线部分出现了their这个形容词性的代词，明显这个指代了chimpanzees，由于这题这是一个句子，句子中的指代不能有歧义，那么后半部分划线句的E选项，they这个代词指代就不正确了吧，为什么这题还能选E呢，请NN解释一下

指代是就近原则呀，指的是other animals, 不是说一个句子里只能有一个they的。

对啊，一句话是只能有一个they，但是你看看这题前部分有一个their，是指代前面的名词的，这样they岂不是歧义了吗

代词歧义永远是最后考虑的，Ron 以及曼哈顿的SC 都说过，包括GMAT官方考题都存在很多代词指代具有歧义的问题，所以除非别的选项里给出了将代词替换为名词的情况，否则别去管它，那不是考点。相比之下，别的选项都有明显的语法问题。1.when
引导的条件句，结果必须为100%确认 2.in as much depth 3.you can't put 'would' + noun + 'be' in a statement other than a question. (https://www.manhattanprep.com/gmat/forums/post115054.html#p115054)

根据Ron大神所说，gmat正确答案里面代词有可能出现歧义的，对代词的宽容度比较高~
所以如果五个选项中，代词都是有问题的话，那么这道题的split并不是代词了
