23. Trans World Entertainment Corporation, which owns the laceName w:st="on">RecordlaceName> laceType w:st="on">TownlaceType> and Saturday Matinee retail chains, announced that since sales of up to one-fourth of its stores are poor, they will be closed.

A)       that since sales of up to one-fourth of its stores are poor, they will be closed

B)       it is closing up to one-fourth of its stores, which accounted for its poor sales

C)       it was closing up to one fourth of its stores because of poor sales.

D)       to be closing, on account of poor sales, up to one-fourth of its stores.

E)     having poor sales, such that up to one-fourth of its stores will be closed.

查了Longman, 似乎announce后面可以省略that引导宾语从句, 但是例句保留了, 而且GMAT中宾语从句的保留that是一种正规表达方式, D的announce to do的用法不idiomatic, C我觉得算是Run-on.

我选A, A中后面的they指代stores.

同意Avantasia

是anounce to do 不行,只能说“anounce that" 嘛?

A的they确实指代不清,A指its stores但这样意思就不对了。

D的anounce to do可能不好:Longman有这样的句子:They announced plans to close 11 factories.

on account of 不好,一般because从句优于because of优于on account of ,而且在做过的题目中我还没有印象on account of做正确选项的。 另外on account of这里做插入语意思表达也不好,好像是说 这个Corporation poor sales,而更准确地说是one-fourth of its stores poor sales。

Drives me crazy...

A中since sales of up to one-fourth of its stores are poor, they will be closed是一般将来时,而announced是过去时。

OG147. At a recent session, the French government decided that (Paris needs a second, larger opera house to complement the famous Paris Opera).

大全99. Although the manager agreed to a more flexible work schedule, he said that (it must be posted on the bulletin board so that both management and labor will know what everyone) is assigned to do.

Aristotle said that the Earth rotates the Sun.
2.
French government decided that Paris needs....
3.

announced that我刚刚查了一下Longman,没看到announced that用一般式的。

我前面提到they会被认为是指its stores, 这样they will be closed,就会被认为这家公司(all)stores will be closed,但实际是one-fourth of its stores的sales poor,所以这one-fourth of its stores要关掉,而不是its stores(会被理解为全部的店)

但是they是不是指代的就是“one-fourth of its stores"呢?

我支持A。

accounce to be closing, OG确实有 because/because of/on account of之间的比较, 而OG没有选择on account of的唯一原因是说他不简洁, 这只是efffectiveness的问题. longman上面对on account of 的解释:

on account of something: because of something else(两者对等), especially a problem or difficulty:

She was told to wear flat shoes, on account of her back problem.

C

可是在longman 中没有announce to do的用法呀?

关于on account of 的说法,支持!

C!我发现OG164,答案C,ETS解释说C不对,因为proposed fundings...to be错!应该是proposed fundings...be。

OG139

The extraordinary diary of William Lyon Mackenzie King, prime minister of Canada for over twenty years, revealed that this most bland and circumspect of men was a mystic guided in both public and private life by omens, messages received at séances, and signs from heaven.

(A) that this most bland and circumspect of men was a mystic guided in both public and

(B) that this most bland and circumspect of men was a mystic and also guided both in public as well as

(C) this most bland and circumspect of men was a mystic and that he was guided in both public and

(D) this most bland and circumspect of men was a mystic and that he was guided in both public as well asA

(E) this most bland and circumspect of men to have been a mystic and that he guided himself both in public as well as

In choices C and D, that is required to introduce the clause x was a mystic if that introduces the second clause, he was guided....

OG155

Federal authorities involved in the investigation have found the local witnesses are difficult to locate, reticent, and are suspicious of strangers.

(A) the local witnesses are difficult to locate, reticent, and are

(B) local witnesses to be difficult to locate, reticent, and are

(C) that local witnesses are difficult to locate, reticent, and

(D) local witnesses are difficult to locate and reticent, and they are(C)

(E) that local witnesses are difficult to locate and reticent, and they are

Moreover, A, B, and D lack the conjunction that needed to introduce the direct object clause.

A number of linguists contend that all of the thousands of languages spoken by the world’s five billion people can be traced back to a common root language.

(A) that all of the thousands of languages spoken by the world’s five billion people can be traced

(B) that the world’s five billion people speak thousands of languages of which all can be traced

(C) the world’s five billion people speak thousands of languages which are all traceable

(D) all of the thousands of languages spoken by the world’s five billion people to be traceable(A)

(E) the ability to trace all of the thousands of languages that are spoken by the world’s five billion people

B and C produce convoluted and ill-focused sentences by making the world’s five billion people the subject of the noun clause.

否则,他就应该说C的错误是没有that,而不是to be 改成be.

Choice C omits that, the object of proposed that is needed to introduce the clause describing the proposal.

OG 164.Choice C omits that, the object of proposed that is needed to introduce the clause describing the proposal. C also uses to be unidiomatically where be is correct: the commission proposed [that] funding... to be obtained is wrong.

Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary (

[+ that] The Prime Minister has announced that public spending will be increased next year.

C. Company A announced it was closing up to one fourth of its stores because of poor sales.

D. Company A announed to be closing up to one fourth of its stores because of poor sales.

故大家在 Longman 上找不到 announce to do 的用法。

to be closing
但是 OG 从来没有考过 to be doing 的形式。

most likely, 这道题的 C, 作者少抄了个 that。

A 里面THEY指待不明
