标题: 求助一道OG上的SC!!谢谢!
37. Not trusting themselves to choose wisely among the wide array of investment
opportunities on the market, stockbrokers are helping many people who turn to
them to buy stocks that could be easily bought directly.
(A) stockbrokers are helping many people who turn to them to buy stocks
that could be easily
(B) stockbrokers are helping many people who are turning to them for help
in buying stocks that they could easily have
(C) many people are turning to stockbrokers for help from them to buy
stocks that could be easily
(D) many people are turning to stockbrokers for help to buy stocks that
easily could have been
(E) many people are turning to stockbrokers for help in buying stocks that
could easily be

答案是E。
D To buy is not idiomatic in this context—in buying would be correct 这里说help (n.) to buy在这个上下文里不对,要用help(n.) in doing。这两个有啥区别嘛?
还有 对A的解释 the adverb easily is misplaced in the phrase could be easily bought.  easily放在be的后面是错的,放在be的前面就是对的了。这两个有什么区别?
求大神解答!!

我的理解是这样的:这个题目一定要先从语义和上下文来判断。many people are turning to stockbrokers for help,到这里为止可以看出help是名词,是寻求经纪人的帮助。而help sb. to do sth.的help只能是动词,所以这道题只能选E, 是turn to sb. for help in doing sth.

明白了!原来这儿还有个问题!

我的理解是这样的
turn to sb for help to buy stock的意思是to buy stock表目的,就是turn to sb for help的目的。找经纪人帮忙,目的就是为了买股票。
turn to sb for help in buying stock的意思是in buying stock是turn to sb for help中help的内容。找经纪人在买股票这件事情上得到帮助。
两者之间还是有一些意思的差别的。
另外,help在作名词时,可以有以下几种用法:
help with sth 在某事上给予的帮助
help to sb 对某人的帮助
help of sb/sth 某人或者某事给予(他人)的帮助
help in doing sth 在做某事上给予的帮助

这道题另外一个梗其实正是在could have been bought 和 could be bought两者的差别上,暂时先忽略副词easily位置的问题,我个人觉得这个副词位置问题真不好理解,老外自己又多拎得清呢?真拎得清OG答案怎么不给写清楚点!!
D选项could have been bought意思是本可以买。也就是说他们找股票经纪人帮忙,买一些本可以买过现在本应该买过的股票。
这样意思就是人们不相信自己的眼光,找经纪人帮忙,买一些自己本来早就应该直接买过现在本应该在自己账户下面的股票。意思侧重点在时间差上,你现在找经纪人买股票,但是这些股票你找经纪人之前就该买了。
E选项could be bought意思就比较简单。人们不相信自己的眼光,找经纪人帮忙买一些可以直接买的股票。意思侧重点就在找经纪人帮忙上,这些股票你现在可以就直接买,但是你不相信自己的眼光,找经纪人帮忙买。

这样再结合上help to do/ help in doing sth就有很大分别了:
D: turn to sb for help to do sth that could have been done的意思就可以理解为,你要买股票,找经纪人帮忙,但是这些股票你找经纪人帮忙前就该直接买过了。
E: turn to sb for help in doing sth that be done的意思就可以理解为,你找经纪人帮忙买股票,但是这些股票你直接就可以买,非要找经纪人帮忙(替你)买。
相比之下D选项的意思差很多的。

啊好老的题了。看了RON大神的PPT后有了新的理解。正如plan to do和plan for doing的区别一样,plan to do的意思是主语已经计划要去做这件事了,而plan for doing仅仅是做这件事的计划,没有一定要去做这件事。放到这道题的话,help to do表明people要去买股票,且stockholder还要帮助people去买,所以其实意义上有点模糊,到底是people买呢,还是stockholder去买。而help in doing,就仅仅是帮助购买股票这件事情上,语义清晰没有ambiguous,仅仅从ask sb for help to do和 ask sb for help in doing上来讲,后者的意义表达更准确

E is using "easily" to modify "be bought directly." The meaning is that it is easy for people to buy directly. If we move "easily," it is now just modifying "bought." This would mean that what we can do directly is specifically to "easily buy" stocks. It oddly/awkwardly implies that "easy buying" can be direct, but "non-easy buying" cannot. Basically, it violates the order in which we should sensibly apply modifiers. Consider this example:

The movie will soon be shown in Taiwan.

We should be able to move "soon" right next to "shown," right? "The movie will be shown soon in Taiwan." However, putting the two modifiers next to each other at the end confuses the meaning. The meaning of the original was that the movie would be shown in Taiwan, and that this would happen soon. In the rewrite, "in Taiwan" modifies "will be shown soon" or even just "soon" (as opposed to just "shown"). This implies that while it will be shown soon in Taiwan, it might not be shown soon anywhere else.

Here's one other example of how adverb placement can affect meaning:

I will gladly sing sadly. (Correct. "Gladly" modifies "sing sadly." I would be glad to sing in this way.)

I will sing gladly sadly. (Incorrect. I would never write this way, but the most likely meaning would be the opposite of the above. I will sing gladly, but I will be sad while I am doing so.)

把D的定从改写一下,就是stock easily could be bought directly.听上去就很别扭,一般的顺序是情态动词,adv, 实意动词。如:I can hardly wait to see my parents.
如果是方式副词的话,可放在句尾,如:We could see the tree clearly.

看了好几个关于 easily 的位置的帖子,个人觉得,could easily be bought directly 在强调 easily,而 could be easily bought directly 在强调 directly。could be easily bought directly 也可以改写成 could directly be easily bought,这和原句的意思不符合,逻辑也不通。这是我自己的理解哈,欢迎讨论一下!

三刷的时候终于差不多理解could be easily bought directly和could easily be bought directly的区别了

GMAT club里的expert解释说:

E is using "easily" to modify "be bought directly." The meaning is that it is easy for people to buy directly. If we move "easily," it is now just modifying "bought." This would mean that what we can do directly is specifically to "easily buy" stocks. It oddly/awkwardly implies that "easy buying" can be direct, but "non-easy buying" cannot. Basically, it violates the order in which we should sensibly apply modifiers.

我的理解是:could be easily bought directly,easily修饰的仅仅是bought,所以就变成了股票被简单购买是很直接的,也就是说easily在这儿仅仅修饰bought,而directly修饰的是easily bought;而could easily be bought directly的意思是,股票可以很简单地被直接购买,easily修饰be bought directly,显然后者是符合句意的。

我感觉这个的差别和那种only to的用法很类似,也就是你要修饰什么你就放在什么的前面

这个expert还举例说:

The movie will soon be shown in Taiwan.
We should be able to move "soon" right next to "shown," right?--> soon修饰的是be shown in Taiwan这个整体

"The movie will be shown soon in Taiwan."
However, putting the two modifiers next to each other at the end confuses the meaning. --> soon仅仅修饰了in Taiwan,意思是仅仅是会很快在tw上映,那么在其他地方是不是soon就不知道了

不过我觉得OG既然也写得模模糊糊的,应该不是重要考点~
