Q26:
There are several ways to build solid walls using just mud or clay, but the most
extensively used method has been the forming of bricks out of mud or clay, and, after
some preliminary air drying or sun drying, they are laid in the wall in mud mortar.
A. the forming of bricks out of mud or clay, and, after some preliminary air drying or
sun drying, they are laid
B. forming the mud or clay into bricks, and, after some preliminary air drying or sun
drying, to lay them
C. having bricks formed from mud or clay, and, after some preliminary air drying or
sun drying, they were laid
D. to form the mud or clay into bricks, and, after some preliminary air drying or sun
drying, to lay them
E. that bricks were formed from mud or clay, which, after some preliminary air
drying or sun drying, were laid
Answer: D
Mine B
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
看上去就很乱的题目,但是觉得D的has been to form 似乎有点问题,更倾向于用B的 Has been forming
这里has been是谓语,to form 和to lay 一起作为不定式做表语。
为了好理解,我把has been改成is。
the method is to form bricks and to lay them in the wall.所以D对。
A可简化成:the method is the forming of bricks, and they are...
B可简化成:the method is forming bricks and to lay them in the wall.
84. One legacy of Madison Avenue's recent campaign to appeal to people fifty years old and over is the realization that as a person ages. their concerns change as well.
(A) the realization that as a person ages, their
(B) the realization that as people age, their
(C) to realize that when a person ages, his or her
(D) to realize that when people age, their
(E) realizing that as people age, their
In choice A, the plural pronoun their does not agree in number with the singular noun person. Choices C, D, and E can be faulted for failing to complete the construction One legacy ... is with a noun that matches the noun legacy; these choices use verb forms--the infinitive to realize or the present participle realizing--in place of a noun such as realization. Further, when in C and D is less precise than as in characterizing a prolonged and gradual process such as aging. B is the best answer.
但同样,在GMAT中还存在“the way... is to do..”
句子基本结构是"the method has been to do and to do"需要两个动作并列,所以选D。
A选项用the forming of。。。(名词)与they were laid(句子)并列,错误
C选项用having bricks formed from mud or clay(分词短语)与they were laid(句子)并列,错
E选项,the method has been that的大结构没有错误,但从句中which修饰的是mud or clay,修饰对象错,句意错
偶也感觉这个题目the method is to do sth的结构以前好像很少见。
前面的ways to build 和后面的 the methods to form 就是很好的平行和对称!
此题选E
method be +that引导的名词性从句正是method be n. 另外注意E中使用的是which were,所以这个which是跳跃修饰bricks,不是mud or clay。如果which是修饰mud or clay这两个由or连接的单数名词应该用which was,故此which没有修饰歧异。
method has been....and they are laid....
B:forming ...and to lay
C:having错
D中:method is to do and to do.2个to do 代表一个method感觉很怪。此外,就如OG所说,method be n.

我實在不明为何 have been + to form...
is it 为了平行 to build soild walls?

D. to form the mud or clay into bricks, and, after some preliminary air drying or sun
drying, to lay them
E. that bricks were formed from mud or clay, which, after some preliminary air
drying or sun drying, were laid
the most extensively used method has been to form the mud or clay into bricks and, after some preliminary air drying or sun drying, to lay them
