"Another example of indirect negative
consequences occurred in England when a virus introduced to control
rabbits reduced the amount of open ground (because large rabbit
populations reduce the ground cover) ...."

Perhaps my brain is dead today, I read this sentence several times and still felt confused.

If a virus is introduced to control rabbits, then the rabbits is goint
to become samller in size, so the amount of open groupd shoud be
increased. Have I misunderstood this sentence?

I agree with you after carefully reading the sentence. You know all GWD came from the memory of persons who take real GMAT test. It's possible that there exist some mistakes. Understanding the whole passage and ETS style is most important for you.
