6.     Which of the following best completes the passage below?

People buy prestige when they buy a premium product. They want to be associated with something special. Mass-marketing techniques and price-reduction strategies should not be used because______

(A) affluent purchasers currently represent a shrinking portion of the population of all purchasers

(B) continued sales depend directly on the maintenance of an aura of exclusivity

(C) purchasers of premium products are concerned with the quality as well as with the price of the products

(D) expansion of the market niche to include a broader spectrum of consumers will increase profitsB

(E) manufacturing a premium brand is not necessarily more costly than manufacturing a standard brand of the same product

这题对提干和答案都不是很理解,到底说什么呢?

1. B is kind of the best answer.

2. "something special" matches "exclusivity" which is expressed in B.

3. Option C is really a trap, which may lead you to connect 'premium' with 'good quality';

however, quality are not mentioned in the context.

4. In B, there are two key words which need to clear: one is 'maintenance' which means

keep or retain rather than repair or fix; the other is 'aura' that means feeling or

   characteristic of a person.

5. The reason why i thought B is 'kind of'' the best one is:

the author attempted to link/equalize/correlate 'Mass-marketing techniques and price-

reduction strategies' with  'continued sale' but marketing knowledge could tell us these

two are not necessarily always the same trend.

6. i may misunderstand 'continued sale'. Any comments are welcomed, particularly from

those comrades who are marketing expertises, which would help all of us clarify on this

   point.

Two factors: don’t use mass-marketing and/or price-reduction.

B: exclusivity: no mass-marketing, silent on price-reduction.

A: silent on both. Affluent ones may still like price-reduction. To say they don’t care about price because they are affluent is extra deduction. Mass-marketing may also work for a shrinking portion of the market.

So B is better than A.
