标题: 最佳入读商学院的年龄 The Best Age to Go to Business School
Hey Guys, here I want to share an article from an US website about the best age to go to business school. Do you know when should apply for MBA?
As always, if you have a question about your applications, feel free to leave a comment here or send me a private message here or on Wechat. I'm happy to help!
To get the best pay out of your MBA, you have to graduate within a narrow age window
Business school is a profitable decision but less so as students approach their 30s. An analysis of data collected by Bloomberg suggests that getting a master’s in business results in a pay bump that increases the older a graduate is—until she hits 30.
As part of its ranking of full-time MBA programs, Bloomberg surveyed more than 10,000 people who expected to graduate business school in 2014. The ages and starting compensation for people who had jobs lined up when they graduated, plotted in the chart below, show that in one's mid-20s, paychecks bump up for every year of age, which makes some intuitive sense—a 28-year-old might have more experience and education than a 24-year-old. Surprisingly, though, age stops giving graduates a pay advantage fairly quickly. Pay levels hover in the mid-$120,000s range between ages 28 and 34, peaking at age 30, and then begin to drop off steadily, falling to $110,000 at ages 36 and 37.

The typical 26-year-old graduate earned $14,000 more than the typical 25-year-old, who earned $22,500 more than the typical 24-year-old.
Older graduates also have a clear disadvantage when it comes to the gap between what they earned before getting an MBA and after. Looking at those pay bumps offers a better sense of how big an advantage an MBA brings than the compensation figures and paints a more striking picture of how helpful an MBA is, in salary terms, as students age. The chart below shows the post-MBA pay increase for students who had jobs before they started B-School, and were set to start jobs when they graduated.

Compensation bumps get smaller with each year of age, reflecting the fact that older MBAs tend to enter their programs with higher salaries, making their post-B-School pay increase less dramatic.
Of course, it isn’t as if the ancient 30-somethings are getting nothing out of their time on campus. The typical 37-year-old got a 37 percent pay bump after finishing school. Compared with the youth, though, that uptick does not seem impressive. Twenty-nine-year-olds saw their compensation balloon by a median of 81 percent, and 25-year-olds enjoyed an enviable 130 percent pay increase.
The upshot for people mulling a degree in business? Start early, when you can still feel superior to people your boss’s age.

30 graduation >> 28 matriculation >> less or equal to 6 yrs of work experience would be ideal (assuming 22 start working)

Jon, my question would be how about for people who had a master degree or even PHD already? Sometimes, age can't 100% reflect years of work experience. So for an applicant, age or years of work experience matters more?

Hey there,
It’s a good question but there’s no clear answer here. The schools will look at your package as a whole. And consider everything together. And it’s ALL important. If you get back to me with more specific detail, I might be able to tell you more.
Best,
Jon Frank

Hi Jon,
Thanks for your reply. What I am trying to figure out is a feasible career path since I am struggling with my essay now. I had my master in US right after college, and worked in the US for two Chinese State-owned companies for almost 6 years. I am in my early 30s, and wonder if I graduate around 34 (if I got admitted around 32), am i still "qualified" for the associate position in consulting firm. Many thanks!

Hey,
Good question. You are right that Associate at a Consulting Firm may not be a realistic goal. Instead you may want to find some in-industry goal, say at some sort of middle management position that would be good for someone with your experience, to make the goals more plausible.
I hope this makes sense!
Best,
JF

Hello Sharon,
Good to hear from you.Well to make a successful career switch, the most important things are: 1. to go to a good program 2. to network like all hell 3. to prepare yourself as much as possible for that specific career (meaning knowledge and skills). Overall I think either degree can work, although I’d lean slightly towards the MBA with real estate specialization as you can leave your options open and get more managerial experience.
Best,
Jon Frank

Hi!Jon
I have read a lot of your articles posted on CD Forum, I really appreciate your professional experience and profound analysis about MBA issue.
I here hope i am not venturing to ask for your advice. I have been wondering whether a MBA degree should be taken into account under my circumanstance.
My backgroud information is as following:
Male, 34 years old, married
Degree obtained: Master in Manangment(Major in Stratigic Manangement and Supplychain Manangement, GPA 3.2/4.0), Bachelor in Management(Major in Management Information System GPA 3.1/4.0)
10 years' working experience in China: 4 years in Ernst Young as a senior acccountant(Leading audit teams to serve Fortune 500 companies listed in China and Hongkong), and 6 years in a local financial group (with a asset scale of 40 billion RMB, a revenue scale more than 2 billion RMB) as invesment business department manager(Leading a business team of about 10 people with PE/VC/MA business, contributing more than 50 million RMB revenue every year).
My wife is a Canadian citizen, and so is my son, while I am a Chinese citizen. Recently, we have been discussing moving back to Toronto next year for a better edcuation for our boy. I am planning to apply for a Canadian PR when i land in Canada and meanwhile look for a job there.
But i concerned more about my career in Canada because i don't bear a recognised degree or any work experience in Canada. I can't afford to pursuing a full-time degree either for i have a family to feed.
Does a Canadian MBA degree make sense to an old man like me? or should I just only look for a job with my current background in Canada?
Looking forward to your kind reply and enlightening adivice. Thx!
Yours sincerely.
Gavin

Dear Gavin,
Well you ask a difficult question, and not one I can answer entirely because a lot of them have something to do with personal decisions, which of course I can’t make for you, and you should discuss with your family. I also don’t know much about the immigration system in Canada nor really how you can get papers. But my tendency is to say try anything that seems reasonable or possible. It seems to me that you aren’t that excited about doing an MBA and don’t really need one to continue your career. You have your 10 years of career history in China, which should be good enough to land you a good job (Although it may not be easy at first).
If you DO want to do an MBA and it has advantages it can be an option for you (of course you will have to do the GMAT and all that first), but you might also have other good options - just looking for a job, doing a part-time MBA, doing another type of Masters, or some sort of studies. Since your wife is Canadian you might also have some options to study for free, which might be a better choice to allow you to take some time off without incurring costs that are too high.
These are all thoughts and options, but in honesty I don’t have a concrete answer for you. But definitely explore all options including an MBA.
I hope these thoughts have been helpful for you,
Best,
Jon Frank
