之前的帖子都在讨论C和D. 为什么是but are,是明白的。我不明白的地方就是E和D比较起来，为什么要排除E而留下D。我在做题的时候觉得，D比E差一点，因为E没有了they, 指代就比较明确了啊。

求牛牛解释～～

E里面but 标志着平行结构啊，but后面是are，跟谁平行呢？

是idiom的问题，这里可以直接查 Manhattan 的章节
becasue of + noun. 不过要区分 because of 和 due to 的用法
没记错的话 of 结尾的idiom一般直接加 noun，未检验。
指代的敏感也是对的，不过因为容忍度大，一般最后排除用。

这里的平行结构是：are not....but are的结构呢。就是不是严格意义上的。

due to ,之前，我有看到一牛牛说直接用due to＝caused by,来理解句子的逻辑意思就好。

因为they之前就有很明显的两个复数的名词：traits和products,而且也没有特别明显的主从句来区分这两个复数名词的重要性程度，所以还是觉得这个they是不是不妥当啊。不好意思，回复晚了，我没设回复通知，刚才看见呢。

谢谢啦。我明白了，刚才也Google了半天，because of 后面是加名词或名词短语的。就是相比较D更好些吧。虽然，在they的指代上，还是有点疑虑。非常感谢啦！

建议研究一下平行
这个在GMAT里要求是比较严格的，做题时是很好用的语法点。
平行前后的性质一定要对等
跟谓语动词平行的一定是另一个谓语动词
跟名词性质结构平行的一定是名词性质的结构
not of... but of...
are not ... but ...
混淆了就是错误

平行的基础是建立在语义的一个平行基础之上的。

从语义逻辑上来说是：many biological traits,不是（are not) 一种什么产品，而是(but are)一种什么副产品.
这是符合语义的平行的一种对称关系。忽略语义逻辑，套用not are, but are.这样有点不妥吧。

“结构正确”恰恰是为了表意顺畅、准确，无歧义。
Stephen Jay Gould这个题正确选项是原题的D

对的呀。D后面是有are的。我写的那个用的是原题（A选项）

直接摘Manhattan instructor Tim 的原话吧：i'm going to go a step further and recommend you never consider pronoun ambiguity. in my experience, there are pretty much no legitimately ambiguous pronouns on the GMAT. if you see what you think is an ambiguous pronoun, it is FAR more likely that you have made a mistake than that the pronoun is actually ambiguous..
分析：主要因为GMAC认为，有些题目虽然看似有两个选择，其实语意上只有一种是成立的，表达和理解明显无歧义。这道题里面，products of... 显然不符合语境。所以GMAC认可这种用法。不过Tim的话可以作为一种答题策略。

ps. Tim的话不是针对这个题目，分析是我写的。

但是E选项不能说是，enhancing是形容词修饰吗，然后because of reproduction or survival

本题中Not…but…根本就是不是那个固搭（平行的trigger not..but…）。本题中，Not 是动词的一部分 are not，后面的but是连接traits are…but are…的连词。
