这句话的意思是不是某某山区布満了修道院，这些修道院是几个世纪前从岩石中开凿出来的，chiseled from....是不是看做为分词的省略结构，如果用many of them were chiseled from...可不可以呢

省略了were 是因为 many of them ... agao 整个句子作 monasteries 同位语，解释说明 monasteries 的.
