Six signposts to greater creativity

[Time 2]
This time around, I'm using six quotes about creativity to inspire some practical steps that will help us putting their messages into action.

1: "It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all." – Edward de Bono

ACTION: Make a ritual of coming up with 10 ideas a day about whatever project or topic is your focus at the moment. Don't judge them as you go; write down even the ones you know immediately wouldn't work. Two bad ideas that occur to you at different times sometimes combine to make one good one.

Write these ideas in a notebook or computer file. Once a month go over them to assess their usefulness, and implement the ones that could propel your progress.

Write these ideas in a notebook or computer file. Once a month go over them to assess their usefulness, and implement the ones that could propel your progress.

2: "The most potent Muse of all is our inner child." – Stephen Nachmanovitch

ACTION: Set aside to some time to play a little, then have a brainstorming session while still in that mindset. If you have lost touch with your inner child, here are some ways to reconnect.

So you could watch the cartoons you loved (you'll find most of them on YouTube); play a board game; draw a picture (if you like it, stick it on your refrigerator door); make up a poem; play with some children and let them make up the rules of the game.

3: "The highest prize we can receive for creative work is the joy of being creative. Creative effort spent for any other reason than the joy of being in that light-filled space, love, god, whatever we want to call it, is lacking in integrity…" – Marianne Williamson

ACTION: If you are holding yourself back from some creative activity (writing, painting, making a movie, or whatever it may be) because you are afraid you won't succeed, consider redefining success. Maybe the very act of creating IS success.
[Words:347]

[Time 3]
4: "We will discover the nature of our particular genius when we stop trying to conform to our own and other people's models, learn to be ourselves and allow our natural channel to open up." – Shakti Gawain

ACTION: Set aside a bit of quiet time to consider what you are doing mainly because it is expected of you by society, by your friends and family, by your parents (or their memory). Make a list. Are there items on there that no longer serve you? What is the worst that could happen if you stopped doing those? What is the best that could happen (e.g., what would you have more time for)? It can be scary but starting with one small thing will give you more courage.

5: "I began by tinkering around with some old tunes I knew. Then, just to try something different, I set to putting some music to the rhythm that I used in jerking ice-cream sodas at the Poodle Dog. I fooled around with the tune more and more until at last, lo and behold, I had completed my first piece of finished music." – Duke Ellington

ACTION: Tinkering is a lot less intimidating than inventing. If there's something you'd like to create, start with something that exists, get into a playful state of mind, and tinker. As with all creative activity, put aside the impulse to judge, that comes later.

There are lots of attributes you can play around with: size, frequency, color, shape, sound, look, feel, smell, purpose. Try applying each one.

6: "If you hear a voice within you say, 'You cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced." – Vincent Van Gogh

ACTION: The same applies to whatever your voice may be saying you cannot do. We tend to think that the belief comes first, then action, but it works the other way around, too. If you think you can't write, paint, get fit, learn a language...just start. Don't wait for that voice to stop, treat it as background noise.

6 Secrets to a Successful Sales Meeting

[Time 4]
Sales meetings are a critical component of a great sales culture -- an opportunity to build the skills of the entire team and motivate them. In each meeting, if you provide your team with just one idea, strategy or tactic that will improve their game, and motivate with some positive reinforcement or reward, you will see a gain in productivity and sales results.

Here are six keys that guarantee your next sales meeting will help deliver the results:
1. Start with an energizer. Begin your meetings on time and start with some fun. Reward those who are punctual to help eliminate the lateness factor.

From week to week you'll find my team doing trivia games, telling funny stories, sharing sales highlights of the week, or discussing their focus for the month ahead.

2. Keep it simply simple (K.I.S.S.). Always ask, "Does this item need to be in the meeting or could it be done outside the meeting or as pre-work?"

Keep it simply simple with four steps: Make sure the pace of the meeting is fast, create the right atmosphere by ensuring it is fun, add value by helping the team better execute on a key sales skill that will help them close business and have shared ownership, meaning you have the members share content on a regular basis.

3. Have three rules for individual updates. When discussing personal updates make sure the topics are small and the answers timed, so they don't take over the meeting or sap the team's energy.

To ensure individual updates don't take up too much of the sales meeting, follow these three rules: set time limits, create different themes around successes, like key learnings and future focus and know when to take individual issues offline.

4. Motivate and reward. You must build motivation into every team meeting. The sales team has a tough challenge and needs to feel supported and recognized. This isn't about big gifts or exceptional moments -- the simplest "thank you" can have great meaning.

Think about sorting the rewards into different categories. You can make them fun, competitive, team-based, recognition-based or even externally focused, such as getting input or recognizing someone outside of the sales team.

5. Capability activity. Every sales meeting must stretch and challenge team members' skills to keep them at the top of their game. Capability activities can focus on prospecting, networking, lead generation, client meetings, presenting solutions or closing. The capability activity is all about ongoing skill development and is the key to creating value at the meeting.

6. Standard agenda. If you follow our format, you'll have a standard, consistent and easy-to-follow agenda that will keep you focused and on track. With it, you can reduce your meeting preparation time dramatically. Keeping your agendas in a folder for reference will also ensure you don't repeat any of the fun and creative segments.

With these six keys, my sales managers have managed to reduce meeting preparation time to 10 minutes or less per meeting, while consistently creating high-value meetings. This focused and consistent investment of your time will guarantee gains in your sales teams' productivity and overall results.

Why new college grads struggle in the job market

[Time 5]
Anybody graduating from college this spring should be forewarned: You’re probably expecting a better job than you’re going to get. Nobody denies it’s a tough job market for young workers, with the unemployment rate for twenty somethings well above the national average of 6.3%. Crushing levels of student debt compound the problem for those carrying it. And there’s still a gap between the skills students develop in college and those employers actually want.

But new grads also continue to have inflated expectations of what employers are likely to offer, which seems surprising given how discouraging the news about the entry-level job market has been during the past few years. A new study by Accenture reveals many ways recent grads have exaggerated hopes for their first job. A few examples:

Pay. Only 18% of the members of the class of 2014 think they’ll earn less than $25,000 in their first job. But 41% of last year’s grads fell below that level.

Meaningful work. Most of this year’s grads — 84% — expect to find a job in a field related to their college major. But only 67% of last year’s grads were able to pull that off.

Training. Eighty percent of 2014 grads think they’ll get formal training at their first job. But less than half do.

The overall economy is slowly getting better, which ought to mean the job market for college grads is improving, too. But that isn’t necessarily the case, according to the Accenture survey. The portion of grads who are employed but feel they’re working in jobs for which they’re overqualified rose from 41% for the class of 2012 to 46% for the class of 2013. And the percentage of grads working full-time has fallen during the past two years, while the portion of part-timers has risen.

[Words 304]

[Time 6]
The news isn’t all bad. For discouraged grads who might be wondering, there’s still convincing evidence college is well worth it. A new study by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco finds college grads out-earn high school grads by $800,000 over their lifetimes, on average. Another recent study reveals grads of middling schools can end up just as satisfied as the scion of elite universities. More important than a school’s sterling reputation, apparently, is the quality of professors able to inspire and connect with their students.

The Accenture survey also offers a few clues about ways recent grads can stand out in a crowded job market and beat the entry-level blues. It encourages employers, for instance, to search for young people with “strong digital brands,” which means those who might have a professional-looking personal Web page, a video resume on YouTube, or demonstrable skills at social media — something the oldsters at the company may not understand. It will help, of course, if pictures of you sucking a beer bong don't pop up when somebody does a Web search for your name.

Some young job candidates may make simple mistakes that harm their job prospects, such as failing to include appropriate keywords on their resume, as some employers use automated keyword searches to filter out unwanted resumes before a live person ever takes a look. Most young grads say they’d be willing to move for a good job, but the problem is often figuring out where those jobs might be and getting an employer's attention. Offering to travel for an interview at your own expense might be one way to indicate your seriousness.

Many recruiters also say young workers — accustomed to doing everything online — underestimate the importance of in-person networking and other types of glad-handing. That’s something most colleges don’t teach. But the sooner young workers learn it, the less disappointed they’re likely to be.

Part III: Obstacle

Five Things to Know about Alibaba
HONG KONG (CNNMoney)

[Paraphrase 7]
The tech company behind the largest and most-anticipated IPO of the year doesn't trace its roots to Silicon Valley, a Harvard dorm room or MIT lab.

Alibaba was founded 15 years ago in the modest Hangzhou, China apartment of Jack Ma -- a former English teacher who started the company with an initial investment of $60,000 kicked in by 18 friends.

The company has since evolved into the dominant force in China's e-commerce industry, a market with so much potential that Alibaba's IPO may be the largest ever by a tech company -- surpassing even the record $16 billion raised by Facebook.

Here are five things to know about the tech giant:
Alibaba does more than just e-commerce: Alibaba is often described as a combination of Amazon (AMZN, Fortune 500) and eBay (EBAY, Fortune 500), with some PayPal sprinkled in to boot. But the shorthand fails to capture the breadth of the business model dreamed up by Ma.

By one estimate, almost four out of every five dollars spent online in China are spent in Alibaba's marketplaces.

The company's top two e-commerce sites, Taobao and Tmall, attract more than 100 million unique visitors each day. Estimates put the value of goods sold last year on the sites at $240 billion -- more than eBay and Amazon combined.

But Alibaba is more than its flagship marketplaces -- it also runs a wholesale operation and a cloud computing business. The company is also linked to a hugely popular digital payment service, Alipay. In a first step into finance, Alipay has started to offer investment funds. Alibaba even operates a taxi-hailing app.

Alibaba has a lock on China: Ever visited Taobao or Tmall? Go ahead and try. The first thing you'll notice is that the marketplaces have little in common with western e-commerce sites.

The website design is distinctly Chinese. Each page is crammed with products in an effort to mimic a crowded Chinese market. Buyers and sellers often use a built-in messaging service to chat with each other, and haggling over prices is standard.

Mastery of China's unique market has allowed the company to survive a series of challenges from companies including eBay, which bought Chinese auction competitor EachNet in 2003.

"I know the Chinese user market and users better than [former eBay CEO] Meg Whitman," Ma told the Wall Street Journal in 2005, as he stole market share from the American firm.

The IPO is going to be massive: The initial document filed with the SEC indicates that Alibaba plans to raise $1 billion, but that figure is seen as just a placeholder. Analysts have said it could haul in more than the $16 billion Facebook raised in 2012.

That's really big -- and if it increases further, Alibaba could be a contender for the largest IPO in U.S. history.

Analysts think the whole company could be worth more than $170 billion, and some sky-high estimates are now pushing $200 billion.

Founder Jack Ma is one very rich former English teacher: One of Alibaba's biggest assets is Ma, who has stepped down as CEO but remains chairman of the company. He's known in China as a charismatic leader with a reputation for bold ideas.

Before founding Alibaba, Ma was twice rejected from a teaching college and was even turned away by a local KFC restaurant.

Ma is ranked China's 29th richest man with a net worth of over $4 billion, according to the Hurun Rich List, which tracks wealth in the country.

The IPO should boost his bank account.

Alibaba has challenges, too: For all the plaudits, Alibaba is not without blemish. Of particular concern are the number of counterfeit goods sold in its marketplaces, and the company's commitment to sound corporate governance.

Hong Kong is the preferred destination for many of China's top companies seeking to go public, but Alibaba chose to list in New York after Hong Kong regulators refused to allow the company's partners to appoint board members.

The company's SEC filing lists only three directors that will remain as the company begins final IPO preparations: Ma, Alibaba CEO Joe Tsai and Softbank (SFTBF) CEO Masayoshi Son. Alibaba says it will eventually have nine board members, but their identities are not yet known.

Alibaba -- like all tech companies -- must also work to adapt as consumers abandon desktop computing and shift to mobile devices.
In addition, the company must effectively manage relations with the Chinese government, which has not developed clear regulations for some services offered by Alibaba.
