PPX 每次找的文章都非常有趣,而且长短适宜,我都成粉丝啦,

1‘08- Narwhale has only one teeth and it grows directly from the upper lip. new report: the narwhale can detect changes in water salinity using only their tusks.
1’18- Why Asian-Americans outperform than other ethic group: they work harder. but with lower self-esteem
3’00- The dangerous landslide in Afghan. 1. the landslide is vulnerable: the dusts from the desert cover the hill. 2. will the landslide will create new hazards: yes, it will create lake or pond. when the volume gets higher, it will flood down to other valley,
2’09- 1. can we detect the dangers? yes, form the google earth map, it’s easy to identify. 2. avoiding the tragedy? : monitoring and warning a head, and people get out of the way. 3. what Washington tragedy: monitored., faster and larger than normal think. people live in too close proximity to it.
1’53- the voting model: what effect the a personal voting: the portion of republicans and democrates a in a voter’s home and where he work. the social pressure will affect the voting a lot!

Why animals eat their baby? Animals always want to leave and take good care of the strongest offerspring in limited sources
So they need to abandoned or eat sick or weak ones
Hand-raising is one option to save them, however, they don not know how to raise their babies
Time2 1’10’’
The tooth in the unicon of the sea is for detect salinity in water according to a research by M
Time3 1’15’’
Asian-American performance better than white peers in academic because they work harder
A-A students showed loe self-esteem and less time spent with firends
Time4 2’40’’
An anlysis about the landslides happened in Afghan
Landslides is quite often because the geology there is vunerablene type is bedrock mixed with old crystalline rocks and young sediments and what is on the top is windblow dust
By the way,the landslides will cause another hazards

Time 5 1’20’’
The landslides is easy to indentify and stay away from it when u find a dangerous slope

In animal kingdom ,some animal parents abandon or even eat their offsprings in order to let other offsprings that are stronger survived. Some zookeepers try to keep the newborn away from their mothers, which will protect the weak generation from being killed ,but someone argues that this action has more drawbacks than benefits.

Speaker:
imitating the sounds of other animals is a special skill for drongo, which can steal food after scaring birds with the sound of their predators.

Speed:
[time 2]1:26
background: a kind of whale has tusk which actually is a tooth. and without it, it will be toothless.
conclusion: a dentist and researcher in HU analysed and concluded that the tooth can detect salinity of sea water.

[time 3]1:51
background: the Asia-American get higher academic achievement and gain bachelor degree in higher percentage. so someone takes about 5000 AA and white peers into a survey.
opinion: the performance of AA is not of a natural ability, but of harder work.
transition: it has setback. they have less time to make friends, more conflict with parents, etc.
conclusion: the high performance expectation and the outsider status should be blamed.

[time 4]3:05
background: the landslide disaster of AF shock professional. it has an unusual high death rate.
three Qs to the professor.
this place is vulnerable to landslide, since beyond solid earth are all sands blowed from other areas.
the death rate is high. about 1000 death is usually seen in common in landslide everywhere in the world. landslide come down in two directions.
further impact: the landslide will form a lake at the foot. and sufficient water will make more people in danger.

[time 5]2:11
three more Qs to the professor.
the risk can be foreseen and already highlighted on Google Earth
how to avoid: most happened in Asia poor countries. the terrain is vulnerable. we do analysis, and low-cost monitoring to warn the people.
the Washington landslide is fast spread and rare in rich countries. people live close to it, despite warning.

[time 6]3:06
research on election behaviour.
opinion: people are impacted by two factors: the preference of home county and the preference of the county they work in.
我讨厌政治。。。好像是提出了什么方法和结论。。。啊啊啊啊!!

Obstacle: 15:33
example: the little sloth cub is survived by keeper.
animal’s behaviour on breeding baby:
eat or kill the sick infant by mother, father, or sibling (sloth is in this case)
first time to be a mother, need time to learn, and nervous about baby (a cheetah example is in this case)
hand-raising by keeper, usually for animal in danger with limited number left on world (a bird example is in this case)
the sloth is somehow hand-raising. this is the last method chosen by keeper, because they want them to be in society. M considers that living along will hinder their ability of being a good mother. researches on mice and primates show the similar result. B doesn’t think so. animals raise their babies in many ways. so it isn’t enough evidence to say hand-raising is negative. cheetah can breed babies of other. so they will try this method for the cheetah cubs.

male whale has a spiral tusk as its teeth and can be use to detect the changes of the water salinity.

3、3'02 122w/min
the natural hazard researcher was shocked by the recent landslides tragedy.many people died in this landslices;
the landslide are really common, can be divide into two types. bedrock is a mixture of old and new rocks, but the top of it is a thick layer which is vulnerable by waterfall.
about 2-3 years a time;
creat a pond and if water level is high enough, the water will fall down valley.
4、2’43 112w/min
by google earth image of the area, we can foresee the landslice.
almost 85% people who killed in landslice are in poor countries, because there are more terrestial activity, like earthquake in the region. but its losses still could be reduced
there is not a clear answer about whether the rich country will continue the landslice.
5、2'45
researchers found voting pattern which was influenced by two factors: the propotion of the two partisan in voter's home county and the same propotion in their work place.
the researchers also preidict the distribution of the republican victory. and it really matched the fact.
6、13’50 136w/min
many animals would eat or abandon their offspring because they have to keep the most healthy offspring to be survive, and sometimes they have not enough energy for their own , so eating some of their child to get more energy to parent the other babies more better. so this is a common behavior in wild which might be hard to understand to us human. And sometimes the sloth bear hurt their children because they don't know how to raise a kid and feel agitated, so they try to kill the babies. The more desire they want to parent, the more they agitated, and the more they want to kill their children. Now, The only way to aviod this situation is hand-rearing, zookeepes can provide the abandoned offsprings with food and cage to grow up, but the option is controversial because leaving their mther may not be a good impact on these offsprings and they would loss their ability to take care babies and get along with others. Despite of the disadvantages, it works well especially to the endangered animals such as a rare bird only left 130 individuals in the world.

Obstacle: 12:29
background: S and M are moms of the baby sloth bear.
reasons: to protect the baby bear from being eaten by his mother.
deeper reason: it is natural history of carnivores. mother is weak to dedicate to the weak and ill

situation: Infanticide can be accidental, too.
example: a cheetah mother is so nervous and agitated so that she hurt her babies inadvertantly.
two ways to handle the proble: hand-raising: there are diverhences of opinions that whether an adult
not be raised by mother will be a good mother.
other animal mothers can help to raise the babies.

Asian-Americans outclass every other ethnic group is due to  Asian-American students work harder.
Reason: A team of sociologists think it's because of the high academic expectations or Asian-American students'  "outsider" status in American society.

[Time4]
Facts: On 2 May a hillside saturated caused more than 2000 people died in Afghanistan.
Petley talked about the geology behind the tragedy:
1-How vulnerable is this region?
It has two different types, one of which is a thick layer of loess and probably the most recent of a whole series of landslides.
2-How unusual was the death toll?
It's more common than we hight think.
3-Did the landslide create new hazards?
A lake now is forming which is rather a dangerous situation, because it could cause a flood down the valley.
impermeable:不可渗透的
landslide:山体滑坡
[Time5]
4-Could anyone have seen this coming?
Google earth was easily identifiable in advance.
5-What can be done to reduce death tolls in future landslides?
A mapping exercise of potentially dangerous large slopes in Afghanistan would cost a fraction of the losses from this single event.
6-Does the 22 March landslide in Washington state, which killed more than 40 people, show that developed countries are also at risk?
It's quite rare in a rich country but the bad thing is that people were living in quite close proximity to it.

Voting patterns in US presidential elections have just 2 pactors: the proportion of  Republicans and Democrats in a voter’s home county and that same proportion in the county where they work.
According to the research, it suggests that some counties, at least, could feel the effects of social pressures in counties on the other side of the nation and  those patterns were a close match to the actual election data.
[笔记]:大长句出现!!
Rather than trying to predict the winner in a series of elections, the researchers focused on the distribution of Republican margins of victory across U.S. counties as well as how correlations between two counties’ vote shares changed with the distance separating them, quantities more commonly used to describe the transition from a demagnetized block of iron to a magnetized one.
主句其实不长,说的是研究者重点关注的是Republican margins的distribution。
我被绕晕住的是后面那个长长的as well as(物理磁力学不好的后果,sigh)
how correlations between two counties’ vote shares changed with the distance separating them, quantities more commonly used to describe the transition from a demagnetized block of iron to a magnetized one.
[Paraphrase 7]
1-Facts: Zookeepers Tabellario are raising a sloth bear because its mother ate her siblings when it was born.
2-Explanations: That’s the natural history of carnivores and infanticide in the wild is well-documented.
Then the author stated how the parents or the siblings do this.
Sometimes infanticide can be accidental too, because young parents also need to learn how to raise babies. Then the author gives examples of the new cheetah mom.
3-Solutions:
1)Situation:When animal mothers neglect or try to kill their own young in captivity, hand-rearing is one option, and the author keeps taking the sloth bear as an instance.
2)Worries:hand-raised animals have a harder time mothering their own babies
3)Dispute and confirm the solutions again:Maternal care in animals is so varied that there isn’t enough evidence to say that hand-raising has a negative effect.

Time 3
Outclass scoured two long-termsurveys/ crunching
The reason why Asian-American ethicgroup outclass their peers is that they regard effort is more important thannatural ability. However, the Asian ethic groups, according to the researcher, are easier to conflict with their parents and less involved with social workcompared with other white peers. High academic expectations or their"outsider" status in American society accounts for the phenomenon.
Time 4
Geology patterns lead to devastatinglandslides.
Vulnerable regions: Both impermeablestrong under rocks and upper loose particle make it possible to landslide when precipitationcome into the void space of the loess.
The rain-induced landslides occurmuch more often than what we think.
The landslide creates a new hazardwhen the material blocks the valley completely.
Time 5
The landslide is easy to be seen onGoogle earth image.
Though the terrain is changed byearth quick and seasonal rainfalls, with appropriate program we can try toreduce loss.
In rich country, landslide is thefirst event to kill that number of people in recent years.
