The Description of A Man & How He Drove His Carriage

He was a man of about sixty, handsomely dressed, haughty in manner, and with a face like a fine mask. A face of a transparent paleness; every feature in it clearly defined; one set expression on it. The nose: beautifully formed otherwise, was very slightly pinched at the top of each nostril. In those two compressions, or dints, the only little change that the face ever showed, resided. They persisted in changing colour come-times, and they would be occasionally dilated and contracted by something like a faint pulsation; then, they gave a look of treachery, and cruelty, to the whole countenance. Examined with attention, its capacity of helping such a look was to be found in the line of the mouth, and the lines of the orbits of the eyes, being much too horizontal and thin; still, in the effect the face made, it was a handsome face, and a remarkable one.

Its owner went down stairs into the court-yard, got into his carriage, and drove away. Not many people had talked with him at the reception; he had stood in a little space apart, and Monseigneur might have been warmer in his manner. It appeared, under the circumstances, rather agreeable to him to see the common people dispersed before his horses, and often barely escaping from being run down. His man drove as if he were charging an enemy, and the furious recklessness of the man brought no check into the face, or to the lips, of the master. The complaint had sometimes made itself audible, even in that deaf city and dumb age, that, in the narrow streets without footways, the fierce patrician custom of hard driving endangered and maimed the mere vulgar in a barbarous manner. But, few cared enough for that to think of it a second time, and, in this matter, as in all others, the common wretches were left to get out of their difficulties as they could.

The Carriage Hit A Child

With a wild rattle and clatter, and an inhuman abandonment of consideration not easy to be understood in these days, the carriage dashed through streets and swept round corners, with women screaming before it, and men clutching each other and clutching children out of its way. At last, swooping at a street corner by a fountain, one of its wheels came to a sickening little jolt, and there was a loud cry from a number of voices, and the horses reared and plunged.

But for the latter inconvenience, the carriage probably would not have stopped; carriages were often known to drive on, and leave their wounded behind, and why not? But the frightened valet had got down in a hurry, and there were twenty hands at the horses' bridles.

`What has gone wrong?' said Monsieur, calmly looking out.

A tall man in a nightcap had caught up a bundle from among the feet of the horses, and had laid it on the basement of the fountain, and was down in the mud and wet, howling over it like a wild animal.

`Pardon, Monsieur the Marquis!' said a ragged and submissive man, `it is a child.'

`Why does he make that abominable noise? Is it his child?'

`Excuse me, Monsieur the Marquis--it is a pity--yes.'

Women Made Half of The Films

Independent films made history this year. For the first time, women made half of the American dramatic productions shown at the Sundance Film Festival. The festival took place at the same time as the release of a study on women in American independent films. Kelly Jean Kelly has more.

Ava DuVernay loves making movies. She has directed three documentaries and two feature films, also known as narrative films. All were independently produced. She says finding financing is often difficult for women.

"In some cases, male-run institutions or male-run organizations or companies find it challenging to wrap their arms about, ‘I'm giving all this money to a woman to make our thing.'"

Ava DuVernay's experience appears to confirm the findings of a study about women in independent film. University of Southern California researchers studied films shown at the Sundance Film Festival between 2002 and 2012. The research team found that close to 40 percent of documentary film creators were women. But only about 25 percent of feature films had women in top positions.

Stacy Smith was a lead investigator of the study.

"Females were perceived to be not as trustworthy leading a crew. They were perceived to be not as confident handling not only financial matters but also leading the production of the set."

There have been exceptions, like Kathryn Bigelow. In 2010, she won the Academy Award for Best Director and Best Movie for "The Hurt Locker." Her film told about American soldiers in Iraq.

And Zoe Kazan was able to find financing for her film "Ruby Sparks," which was released last year. She wrote and starred in the film.
The USC researchers spoke with about 50 film industry leaders and content creators who detailed the barriers women face in movie-making. Most of those questioned are women. Again, Stacy Smith.

"One of their chief obstacles is convincing male-dominated financiers and male-dominated decision-makers of their ability to helm a project and carry it through to commercial viability."

Narrative films depend on financial support from producers or investors who are seeking to make profit. Documentaries often get financing from non-profit groups and investors who care about the subject of the film. Women are more successful in getting funding for documentaries.

Keri Putnam is with the Sundance Institute. She says there are plans to train women about finance.

"Understanding the financing models, understanding how to ask for money, having the courage, the familiarity and the experience going in and teeing up for funding, that's something training can provide."

The study suggests people should be educated about the inequality between men and women in independent feature films. It says this could help more women reach the success and critical praise enjoyed by Kathryn Bigelow.

What Makes A Women Sexy?

What makes a women sexy? Is it her body? Is it the clothes she wears? Is it her voice? Well guess what, the secret that makes a woman sexy is out here. Here are 8 simple things that will make you sexy.

1. Give your tongue some rest
Women are believed to be jabber mouths. This is one trait that most men dislike about them. Talking non-stop will only make you seem like a total bimbo. If you can actually listen sometimes instead of only going on talking, you will be such a breath of fresh air to any man. And as sexy as it seems, you not talking so much will actually want every man to know more about you.

2. Be a little mysterious
Predictable is so damn boring. Don’t just be like any other woman out there. Don’t be so open about yourself and you will find others more interested in getting to know you. You will become a hot topic that men talk about. A mysterious woman is very sexy.

3. Give out a nice laugh
Laughter is the best medicine. Not only will it increase your face value, but it will also make you look so sexy. We’re not talking about a fake laughter with lots of grunting in the middle. We’re talking about a smooth nice laughter, the way they show in movies. This doesn’t mean that you use your sexy laugh for any and everything. Use it at the right time, and it will drive all the men crazy.

【TIME 5】

4. Be hard-to-get
An independent woman who is able to look after herself, is like a challenge for every man. Also a woman, who is strong and not easily driven by sweet talks, appears smart. If you are too easy-to-get, men will find you boring. Men prefer women who pose like a challenge.

5. Focus on your gait
Gait refers to the way a women walks. The manner in which a woman makes her grand entrance can make a man fall in love with her. Drooping shoulders and stomping feet furiously while walking looks very bad. However a woman who maintains the right posture and is able to carry her body beautifully as she walks, can make herself look really sexy.

6. Maintain eye contact
Maintaining good eye contact is very important. It shows confidence. Again maintaining eye contact doesn’t mean staring. Don’t scare a man off by staring at him as if you are some kind of a
psycho. Maintain eye contact when he’s talking to you. With that dreamy look on your eyes, it will make him want to take you somewhere away with him.

7. Flaunt your confidence
A woman who is comfortable in her own skin and gives a damn about the whole world, is sexy. Confidence is shown by the way a woman talks, smiles and maintains an eye contact. However also make sure that you understand the difference between confidence and overconfidence. A confident woman appears sexy, while an overconfident woman may appear stupid. So make sure that you know where to draw the line.

8. Show your intelligence
It is said that sexiness starts in the mind. The person with the correct set of mind can be really very sexy. This doesn’t mean that you behave like a total wonk. You don’t have to show-off your intelligence all the time. Just show it when the time is right and he will surely notice it.

Last but not the least don’t be so obsessed about your looks and you will find yourself looking sexier than ever.

OBSTACLE

Miami Cops Arrested an Innocent Man for Murder Based on a Single, Uncorroborated Witness

In February, a Florida man named Emanuel McGhee was shot dead outside a grocery store in a drug-related dispute. Drug murders can be hard to solve, as witnesses are not often enthusiastic about talking to the cops. But in McGhee’s case, the Miami police got an unexpected break: an eyewitness told them that 20-year-old Walter Collier was the shooter. On the basis of this testimony and little else, Collier was arrested, booked, and charged with second-degree murder.

Unfortunately, as David Ovalle of the Miami Herald reports, Collier was innocent. Late last month, a man named Marquise Bess confessed to killing McGhee as payback for wounds suffered in a previous altercation. The charges against Collier were dropped, and he was released from jail. But a lot of questions remain.

Most of those questions have to do with, as Ovalle puts it, “the perils of one witness cases.” There’s nothing wrong with using eyewitness testimony. The trouble comes when, as seems to have happened in the Collier case, that testimony is uncorroborated. Eyewitness accounts are often unreliable, mostly because humans have terrible memories. People unwittingly distort details, invent things that didn’t happen, and forget things that did, all while insisting that they’re remembering things accurately. And this doesn’t even begin to account for the people who, for whatever reason, deliberately lie.

Walter Collier and Marquise Bess do look a little bit alike, so perhaps the misidentification was an honest mistake. Or perhaps the guy who fingered Collier was just upset that, as Ovallereports, Collier had recently accused him of stealing his car. It’s not clear what happened, which is why I agree with Collier’s lawyer: “Police really need to investigate the motives of witnesses, especially in a one-witness case, before any kind of an arrest is made based on that person’s word.”

The police shouldn’t reflexively distrust every witness who offers to testify. But it’s better to be skeptical than too trusting when a potential life sentence hangs in the balance. You can’t just assume that the truth will be sussed out in court. A good lawyer, of course, can poke holes in flimsy testimony. But the young black men who are disproportionately charged with homicide in this country can’t always afford good lawyers. Poor defendants often work with overburdened public defenders who can’t put as much time into their cases as they might like.

Walter Collier did hire his own attorney. But he was also a young black man with a criminal record, charged with committing a crime in “Miami’s most blighted neighborhood”—in other words, he was the sort of unsympathetic defendant who tends not to triumph in court. The fact that he was freed is lucky for him, but it is also a fluke; others in similar situations have not fared as well.

Take Bennett Barbour, falsely convicted of rape in 1978, even though, as Slate’s Dahlia Lithwick reported, the police had "no physical evidence connecting him to the crime, beyond the eyewitness identification by his alleged victim"; DNA evidence exonerated Barbour last year. Or Anthony Graves, who in 1992 was charged with murdering six people in Somerville, Texas, based on the word of one witness; even though that witness recanted three days later, Graves was still convicted. He spent 18 years in prison—12 of those on death row—before he was released in 2010. Or Ronald Cotton, sentenced to life in prison for rape based on the eyewitness testimony of the rape victim; years later, DNA evidence proved that Cotton was not, in fact, the culprit. Or the three Rockford, Ill., men convicted in 2002 of shooting and killing an eight-year-old boy, based primarily on the word of the boy's uncle; in February, a judge overturned their convictions after he found that audio recordings cast doubt on the veracity of the uncle's testimony. We know about these men because they have been lucky enough to be exonerated, or to have their convictions overturned. There are certainly others who will never be so lucky, whose stories will never be told.

Cops make arrests. Prosecutors bring cases. That’s what they’re expected to do, and they get in trouble if they don’t. But our justice system is based on the idea that, if there is doubt about a defendant’s guilt, it is better to let him go free than to take the chance of imprisoning him unjustly. In this case, Walter Collier didn’t get the benefit of the doubt. If not for a lucky break, he’d still be behind bars, accused of a crime he didn’t commit.

2:56 Women Made Half of The Films
Female film makers are not able to get financial fund as easy as male film makers, mainly because of trustworthy. It's hard for female film makers to get fund from the male-controlled companies, because they don't trust the makers. Female film makers are thought to be less confident, hard to handle leadership role XXXX But women film makers can get fund from non-profit organization to make documentries. Those people who like documentaries are those who care about them. A resaerch in USC shows 40% are documentries makers, and only 25% are film makers. This problem can be solved by training. Teach females how to ask for money, how to networkXXX

5:04 Obstacle: Miami Cops Arrested an Innocent Man for Murder Based on a Single, Uncorroborated Witness
A recent case in Chicago caused thoughts of the trustworthy of one-witness testify. The innocent person was arrested for some crime he never commit, especially the witness was accused of stealing previously by the innocent person. Polices should be more skeptical about the witness' testify, because their motivations of testimony can be susceptible. In addition, for those people who cannot afford attorney fee and time for a lawsuit, the charge can be a disaster. There are other ases involved one-witness testimony, and those cases turned out false charge. Those people are released because we know the testimony are not right later, but what if we never know?

Nowadays, woman's position in independent films are changing. Woman often participant into the films and the most difficulty is not only from the man's power but also from the finding of finance. The reliability of one-witness
Drug murders often difficult to arrest, but Miami police was luck to find a witness. However, the accused murder is innocent when the true murder is found.
People have many reason from physical or mental to provide misleading message. Police really should have a full knowledege about witness's motive.
There are have been a planty of examples of misreasted. They are just a few luck ones from a large group. Others might be from finincal reason still be convienced.

One witness testimony is uncorroborated. why? 1. Bad memories of the witnesses. 2. Witness unwilling to tell the truth. 3. lie
What the police should do about the one-witness cases: 1. be more skeptical, know more about the witness's motives. 2. Look for more physical evidence.
There have been so many misjudgment due to the court only regard the one witness testimony as the sole evidence. We need to avoid this kind of tragedy in the future.

1.        There are a lot of unjust cases or convictions in America. And the reason for this kinds of things happened is that the judges of the court is just depend on one-witness-testimony. these victims did not get the benefit of the principle Juridical idea that, if there is doubt for a defendant's guilt, it is better to let him go free than to take the chance of imposing him unjustly.
2.        Another article about women right and women inequality. There are inequality for women in feature film industry. They are not easy to convict the male-dominated financiers and male-dominated decision-makers of their ability to helm a project and carry it through to commercial viability.
