54. In order to become well-rounded individuals, all college students should be required to take courses in which they read poetry, novels, mythology, and other types of imaginative literature.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.

Issue:

Nowadays with the development of society and individuals, more and more people chase to be a well-rounded person. When it comes to well-rounded individuals, a host of different opinions are held by various individuals. Should all the college students be required to take courses in which they read numerous of imaginative literature? Admittedly, some people give a positive answer with the reasons that individuals can benefit much from such imaginative literature. However, I partly agree with the statement with the reason that how to become a well-rounded individuals all depends on individuals themselves.

On one hand, no one could deny that poetry, novels, mythology, and other types of imaginative literature are plays significant roles in the individuals' development. Such imaginative literature may bring people much creative ideas or fabulous thoughts to their daily study; such imaginative literature may inspire students to explore their spiritual world and find the meaning of life; such imaginative literature may also direct students their direction where to go, basing on the authors' experience and characters. For example, one can acquire logic thoughts when he/she always reads such detective novels, or one will realize the true meaning of love when he/she is addicted in love poems. Life is rife with fun and imagine, if one is pleased to find such beauty from such abundant imaginative literature.

However, on the other hand, we cannot ignore such individuals who are unwillingness to close such imaginative literature, even disgust it. For one thing, after all, human beings are born with various interest and distinct hobbies, and not all people share the same pleasure when they are surrounded by imaginative literature. In other words, could you imagine what can  some students learn, who buried themselves in programming and enjoy it, is required to but reluctant to pare time to read such imaginative literature? As for these students, imaginative literature cannot work, and such policy for them do definitely waste time. For another, can other courses, such as carving, drawing, achieve the same effect of imaginative literature? Obviously, they can, even these courses can better meet some students' interest. As a matter of fact, what college need do is not "require" students to learn such imaginative literature, rather set up ample elective courses covered many fields, and require some credits to be finish. Thus the college may  maximize their  effects, with the goal of educate students to well-rounded individuals.

Furthermore, well-rounded individuals cannot be educated just by several courses; after all, only learning and no practicing could people know how to apply their knowledge to reality's situation? College is required to offer chances to develop students' other core skills, such as how to overcome obstacles, how to communicate with others, how to respect others, and so forth. Only books in addition to practice can someone become well-educated and well-rounded.

To sum up, Admittedly, imaginative literature could provide people with much spiritual thoughts. Nevertheless, it cannot suit everyone and is not everything. To develop well-rounded individuals, what college and society should do is take more into consideration and make a better decision. After all, requiring all the college students to read such imaginative seems not a good choice.
