Hey dude,
Great to hear from you!
So first of all your profile is extraordinarily international. This is a fantastic thing! If there is one thing where you REALLY stand out it is there. And I think by building on this strength you should be able to make a very unique profile.

I think also your work experience is quite good. It shows constant progress, and you are coming from a very good industry and a US BB bank.

Right now the main thing is to get that GMAT score you are aiming at, as that will be capital.

The one thing to watch out for is your proposed goals of moving into PE. Maybe you WANT to, but they aren’t the best goals for your application. You are already in a great industry. Make use of this fact by proposing goals that continue in the same industry.

Your chances and final school strategy will depend upon your GMAT score, but if you hit your target score, I would say that S16 is within range.

I hope this helps!
Best,
JF

Hi Jon,

Really appreciate your time for the detailed reply. Thanks for the advice.

Yes, the experience in multiple countries has taught me a lot and I guess that was probably the reason which brought me to London in the first place given none of my previous schools is a target school for the bulge bracket IB. I will think about how to best leverage them for the application story.

GMAT is definitely the first thing on my to-do list. Will get it started shortly after the CFA exam in 2 weeks.
Hopefully the progress will be on track.

One quick question whenever you have a moment. In terms of why MBA, why would you think it will be challenging to justify if I want to move to buy side from sell side. My concern is if I mention my short-term / mid-term goal is to continue in IB career, they will argue the MBA experience doesn't bring too much value as anyway I will be making progress in banking if I stay. As a MBA grad, they will normally join as Asso.0 or Asso.1 which will be a lower level vs me staying. Wouldn't enhancing fundamental valuation skills sound more reasonable as the purpose? I have been dealing with equity options day in and day out for a while. As a result, so some of the fundamental valuation skills have been long gone. Any thoughts on this?

Would be great if we could keep in touch. I would love to have someone who has been through the whole process as a mentor. Thank you very much for your time in advance.

Best regards

Hi Jon,

Really appreciate your time for the detailed reply. Thanks for the advice.

Hey there,
Sure, it’s a good question. But that’s not really the argument you want to make, I think. What I mean is that an MBA isn’t about “learning some new stuff” be it financial, technical, whatever…. all that, as you pointed out, you can do by yourself. What it’s really about is: 1. Gaining leadership skills, and learning to see like one 2. New opportunities. 3. A network. So I think you need to focus on those things when you justify your reason. Anyhow, you don’t have to worry too much about the reason, since it will inherently make sense anyhow, given the industry you are coming from. But it IS important for the story.

I hope this helps,
Best,
Jon Frank
