Argument

The vice president of human resources at Climpson Industries sent the following recommendation to the company's president.
"A recent national survey found that the majority of workers with access to the Internet at work had used company computers for personal or recreational activities, such as banking or playing games. In an effort to improve our employees' productivity, we should implement electronic monitoring of employees' Internet use from their workstations. Using electronic monitoring software is the best way to reduce the number of hours Climpson employees spend on personal or recreational activities. We predict that installing software to monitor employees' Internet use will allow us to prevent employees from wasting time, thereby increasing productivity and improving overall profits."

Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the prediction and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the prediction.

In the article above, the vice president of human resources claims that the investigation which suggests most of the workers with access to the Internet appears to use company's computers for their personal or recreational events, and thus recommend that a kind of electronic monitoring software should be used in order to improve the workers' effect. The statement that the vice president take seems to be valid at first glance, but after considering the assumptions and predictions asserted in the article hardly, I suspect that the statement in the article is, more or less, groundless.

The vice president cites a survey of the use of the company's computers among the workers. There is no evidents, however, to show that whether the survey is reliable.While it is possible that the survey is made at the work time, it is entirely logically possible that the survey is made during the rest time, in which the workers have no needs to use the computers only for their works. Furthermore, the survey might be made by the methods that checking the emails of the workers and thus threaten the privacy of the workers which is protected by the laws.

Granted that the investigation cited in the article is reliable and the majority of workers indeed address their personal events during their work time, the assertion that the use of the monitoring software is the best way to prevent the workers from wasting time on the personal and recreational events is questionable. Under the monitoring of the software, the workers might feel nervous during their works. Furthermore, there are some alternative ways which have been ruled out without any consideration, such as punishing the workers who use the computer for their personal events, as well as educating the workers.


Provided that the use of the software is a nice modification that prevent workers from using the computers for their own events, the prediction that productivity would increase is unwarranted in my point of view. Being prevented from the use of computers, the workers who used to address their personal events might take another device such as personal phone, and maybe waste more time of working. Thus the productivity of workers would decrease or keep on the constant degree, at most.

In sum, the vice president' statement seems to be valid and the prediction he made in the article is attractive until we considering the alterative possibilities which might go against the prediction. To support the statement, the vice president should rule out the possibilities and make the prediction more reliable.
