I am currently a student in this program. This thread has my attention after a fellow coursemate informed me.
Over the last 3 months, I have made many new friends at HKUST from various continents as mentioned by the initial poster. From what I have gone through and heard from friends in other HK Universities, the course is similar in intensity and rigor. Hence, any prospective candidate would be placed in a good position for a stellar future path - be it in the industry or academia.
Despite not being a MBA course by itself, many of the benefits are brought across from the MBA program to the MSc ones. And, I only noticed some of these benefits after enrolling, since these are not explicitly stated on any official website.
- We have the MBA/MSc Career Centre, which is one of the best I have ever seen. There are many career counsellors of the highest standards, who reply my emails usually within the hour, and help out with any enquiries. They also help out with mock interviews, advice, etc., on a very short turnaround time.
- The Career Centre and the specific MScIM program each organises many different industrial-specific workshops, conferences, talks, etc. Some of the speakers are very high profile, and can be quite costly if you attend it on your own expense (as a non-HKUST).
- There are a plethora of resources provided for free. FT, WSJ, Vault, JobJuice, Gallup, WetFeet, Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters, Eureka Hedge, FinanceAsia, AVCJ, and many more.
Before I enrolled into MScIM, I was concerned with how new the fulltime program actually is. My coursemates and I are serving as the first batch of students of the full time program. The curriculum was established many years ago, and the professors have years of experience teaching and administrating the program on a part time basis and transferred this experience into the full time version.
What I found was that, because of how new the full time version is - both the teaching and administrative staff were extremely receptive and open to ideas. This is important in the formation of the new program. As an institution which adopts the American way, HKUST already places high importance of getting feedback from its students on the quality of teaching, facilities, and more. I find the MScIM program took another step in this direction, by establishing a student committee aimed in bridging communication between the 50-student cohort and staff.
The student committee has managed to organise several events, including an after exam dinner. We are also on track for a hiking, ktv and another dinner event. These events are mostly paid by MScIM program, hence free for students. The committee also liaises with the other MBA/MSc programs and have organised joint workshops and sports events.
I found my experience at HKUST and MScIM program to have been very fulfilling and am excited for the next half year. Hope this helps in clarifying some of the questions prospective students and applicants have. Please ask away if there are any further enquiries.
Thank you.
