Oscar: We’re thrilled that you’ll be publishing your memoir with our company. You’ve had such an interesting life. I’m sure you’ll have lots of titillating stories to tell.
Liz: Well, my memoir will certainly have a lot of stories about my career: the people I’ve worked with and the kindness I’ve encountered in this industry.
Oscar: That’s nice, but people buy autobiographical books for the juicy details, the more salacious the better.
Liz: I was really thinking of focusing on the people who helped me in my career and their selflessness.
Oscar: But I thought you were interested in writing a tell-all book. Considering how many times you’ve been married and the affairs you’ve had, you must have lots of steamy stories.
Liz: I don’t want to be telling tales about people I love or once loved. I want to focus on the positive.
Oscar: You could do that, but your books won’t fly off the shelves without those juicy details.
Liz: Really?
Oscar: Really.
Liz: Maybe I could tell one or two scandalous stories.
Oscar: Now you’re talking.

Five myths about the Washington Wizards
By David Malitz

[Paraphrase 7]

In the NBA, more than half the teams make the postseason, so a trip to the second round of the playoffs shouldn’t be cause for great celebration. But with the Washington Wizards, it’s a journey into the unknown. The team went 32 years between second-round victories before taking the opening game of its showdown with the Indiana Pacers on Monday. With a trip to the conference finals and a potential matchup with LeBron James and the Miami Heat on the line, the Wizards bandwagon is filling up. If you want to sound more informed than the typical fair-weather fan, here are a few myths to discard.

1.With John Wall and Bradley Beal, the Wizards are a young team built for long-term success.

Every NBA franchise is envious of the Wizards’ dynamic starting back court: point guard Wall, 23, and shooting guard Beal, 20. Over the next decade, those two seem destined to rack up All-Star Game appearances while fans debate whether the House of Guards duoor Golden State’s Splash Brothers — Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson — are the league’s best guard tandem.

But take a look at the rest of the contributors to this season’s playoff run, and it’s nothing but veterans. The NBA’s median age this season is 26.5. That’s exactly how old reserve forward Trevor Booker is, and every other Wizard who has seen meaningful playing time this postseason is older than that. Nene is 31. Marcin Gortat is 30. Trevor Ariza turns 29 next month. Martell Webster is an eighth-year pro at age 27. Drew Gooden is 32. Backup point guard Andre Miller, 38, is the fifth-oldest player in the league.

And it’s not like these veterans are blocking a bunch of talented young players. The Wizards were hoping that former Georgetown standout Otto Porter , the third overall pick in the 2013 draft, would be a building block. But few players in league history have ever had standout careers after experiencing a rookie season as poor as his. (All you need to know is that the first Google autofill for his name is “Otto Porter Bust.”) The Wizards have no first-round draft pick this year;the team traded it last offseason for Gortat. It was the right move, but only because the team’s2011 draft class of Jan Vesely, Chris Singleton and Shelvin Mack failed to give the Wizards even one reliable NBA player. Center Kevin Seraphin, 24, is pretty good at Instagram but not very good at basketball.

2. The December 2009 gun incident ruined star guard Gilbert Arenas.

The lowest moment in Wizards history — and that’s really saying something — was the January 2010 suspension of Arenasafter he and then-teammate Javaris Crittenton brought guns into the locker room. When Arenas made light of the situation by infamously shooting “finger guns” during a pregame huddle, Commissioner David Stern suspended him indefinitely, stating that Arenas was not “currently fit to take the court in an NBA game.” (The suspension ended up lasting the rest of the season.)

The truth is that Arenas had not been truly fit to take the court for a few years before that. What ruined Arenas was Gerald **, then of the Charlotte Bobcats, who crashed into Arenas’s left knee on April 4, 2007. At that moment, Arenas was still Agent Zero, one of the league’s most thrilling and marketable stars. Just a couple of months earlier, Scoop Jackson wrote an article about Arenas for ESPN, calling him “the hottest star in sports.” Arenas’s 25th birthday party in January 2007 was a million-dollar bash at mega-club Love featuring performances by T.I., Lil Wayne and the Game. He was hitting buzzer-beaters and coining catchphrases (“Hibachi!”) faster than fans could keep up.

But two knee surgeries later, Arenas played just 13 games in the 2007-08 season. (This didn’t stop the Wizards from signing him to a phenomenally ill-considered six-year, $111 million contract.) More knee complications limited him to just two games the following season. His explosion never came close to returning, rendering him an inefficient, turnover-prone, shoot-first point guard.
3. Michael Jordan’s biggest mistake while running the Wizards was drafting Kwame Brown.
In retrospect, it’s easy to look at the 2001 draft; see four-time all-star and two-time NBA champion Pau Gasol, taken a couple picks after Brown; and say that Jordan, then in charge of personnel for the Wizards, made a massive blunder.

At the time, it was less clear. There was very little consensus at the top of the draft. Other options were high schoolers Tyson Chandler and Eddy Curry, who both went to the Chicago Bulls after being picked second and fourth, respectively. Chandler never reached his potential; Curry is known first for being a colossal bust and second for simply being colossal.

With the first pick you want a potential franchise player, and Brown had that upside. Jordan’s folly was not in choosing him but in deciding that daily, vicious emotional abuse from the greatest player of all time was the best development strategy for a rookie teenager. The most oft-repeated anecdote from Brown’s first season — when he was 19 and Jordan, in the first year of a two-season comeback, was almost 40 — is how MJ would chew out Brown during practice, calling him a “flaming f-----.” (That makes at least two NBA owners who are known to have said horribly offensive things.)

Brown showed promise during his third year, once Jordan had retired for good, averaging 11 points and seven rebounds per game, but he never became an all-star, let alone a franchise player. Maybe it was because of his small hands and poor fundamentals, but Jordan’s management style certainly set the tone.

4. D.C. is a basketball town.

This is a favorite talking point of columnists such as Mike Wise and Michael Wilbon. It may have been true in the heyday of the Bullets-Knicks rivalry in the 1970s and the glory days of the ACC and the Big East. But now, D.C. is unquestionably aRedskins town. After that, it’s a bandwagon town. Even with a boost this season, the Wizards’ local TV ratings rank near the very bottom in the league.

During the past few depressing seasons, Verizon Center regularly felt like a mausoleum — with one exception. Things always got louder in the fourth quarter. Was this because the seemingly sedated fans suddenly became invested in the game’s final minutes? No. It was because of a regular fourth-quarter promotion in the arena: If a player on the opposing team misses both free throws, everyone’s ticket stub is good for a free chicken sandwich from Chick-fil-A. Fan pandemonium, but only in the name of free food.

5. “Wizards” is a terrible name.

“Bullets” isn’t coming back. Deal with it and move on. And be thankful that we are not in the midst of a playoff run by the Washington Sea Dogs. That was one of the five finalistsin a 1996 contest to rename the Bullets. (A mini-myth: Late owner Abe Pollin was spurred to change the name after the assassination of his friend Yitzhak Rabin. In fact, Pollin was exploring a change before the death of the Israeli prime minister.) Rejected names also included Dragons, Express and Stallions. Perhaps “Dragons” could have led to some cool pregame “Game of Thrones” montages, but it’s safe to say we ended up with the best kind of name — somewhat boring, easily shortened and not horribly racist.

Which Friends on Friends Were the Closest Friends?
Chandler and Joey? Rachel and Monica? Slate crunches the numbers.
By Ben Blatt

[Time 2]

This week marks the 10th anniversary of the Friends series finale, which aired on May 6, 2004. In honor of this important occasion, I decided to take a closer look at the series’ decade-long run and attempt to determine which of the six friends were the closest, as determined by which characters spent the most time on screen with each another.

The Friends writers did a remarkable job of distributing screen time evenly among the six principal players. While Joey appears in 47.7 percent of all scenes, the most of any character, Phoebe, the character who appears in the fewest, is just barely behind her pals, with appearances in 41.9 percent of all scenes. (In Seinfeld, by way of comparison, Jerry appears in 58.3 percent of all scenes, while Kramer only appears in 38.4 percent.)

But just because the characters have equal screen time, does this mean that all of the friends were equally friendly? Is there a pair or trio who spent more time together than the others? Is there a pair or trio or foursome who rarely rendezvoused at the Central Perk for a latte and a chat with Gunther?

To determine which characters shared scenes, I downloaded transcripts of all 236 episodes from this remarkably comprehensive fan site. For the purposes of this inquiry, I treated these transcripts as authoritative, as watching all 10 seasons was impractical. Due to inconsistencies in the transcripts, which do not always list all of the characters present in a given scene, I used the following methodology: If a character spoke a line in a scene, I marked him or her as present. Admittedly, this is an imperfect approach, as even with this gregarious group, there were scenes in which a character was present but did not have a line. However, in most instances, all parties present in a scene end up uttering a line, so I’m confident my analysis is sound, even if it missed a moping Ross here or a pouting Rachel there.

[333 words]

[Time 3]

There are 63 possible arrangements in which the six characters could have appeared in any given scene. This includes all combinations of one, two, three, four, five, or six characters. Each one of these 63 combinations occurred during the show’s run, though some combinations are more common than others. For instance, Joey, Phoebe, Monica, and Chandler appeared together 41 times, more than any other foursome. This stands to reason: For a long stretch of the series, Joey and Chandler were roommates as well as friends, and it makes sense that the missing pair were the on-again-off-again lovers Ross and Rachel. Indeed, as you might expect, Ross and Rachel are the two friends most likely to have their own scenes together.

Other combinations of friends were much less common. There is only one scene in the entire history of Friends in which Joey, Phoebe, Monica, and Ross appeared together without either Rachel and/or Chandler. The scene occurred in Season 1, Episode 7 when, during a blackout, the four are left in Monica’s apartment to listen to Phoebe’s newest song: “New York City has no power, and the milk is getting sour, but to me it is not scary, because I stay away from dairy.” During this scene Chandler is memorably trapped in an ATM vestibule with an attractive woman and Rachel is alone on Monica’s balcony.

Is there an outcast in the group? It depends on how you crunch the numbers. In addition to appearing in the fewest scenes, Phoebe also has the lowest degree centrality score (a measure used to assess importance within a network). However, there were 58 scenes in which all of the friends except Ross were together. This is the most instances any one friend was left out; it exceeds the number of times just Phoebe was left out by more than 30 percent.

[307 words]

[Time 4]

In terms of the most popular friend, again, different metrics may tell a different story. But a safe bet is Rachel. She has the highest degree centrality score, making her, at least from a statistician’s point of view, the center of the friend-network.

And which friends were the closest, based on scene counts? There were more scenes featuring all six friends than any other combination of the characters. The most common friend combinations with fewer than six friends present were Ross and Rachel, followed by Chandler and Monica. But those pairings also represent the two couples in the sitcom. If we throw out those more-than-friends combinations, Chandler and Joey are the winners, having appeared in 130 scenes without any other friends, more than any other combination.

Run your own experiments with the FriendsFriend Group widget above. Select any specific set of friends and the widget will tell you how many times each group appeared on screen together. Can you find a trio that appears four times as often if Chandler is added to make it a group of four? The most common third-wheel? The least common group of three? Post your answers and other Friends findings in the comments below.

Why English Doesn't Borrow Much From Chinese

[Time 5]

As languages go, English is a notoriously promiscuous one, borrowing caricatures from Italian, chutzpah from Yiddish and faux pas from French.

And yet despite the English-speaking world's deep and wide confluences with Chinese culture, for some reason, few Chinese words have lately entered the English-speaking world's vocabulary.
China's state media is hoping that could change: Last week, it cited several Chinese entries that have recently appeared UrbanDictionary.com. 'English speakers may soon be saying 'you can you up, no can no bb' in response to criticism,' the official Xinhua news agency said, referring to a Chinese phrase that means if you can do it, do it, and if you can't, don't criticize others. ( In Beijing dialect, 'BB' means to nag or complain.)

But don't hold your breath. There are some 8 million entries on UrbanDictionary.com, a volunteer effort akin to a Wikipedia of slang, the majority of which-'asdfwefewfawefwea,' anyone?-most people would never have heard. (By way of comparison, there are only some 230,000 words in the whole of the Oxford English Dictionary.)

Some of the Chinese terms that have entered UrbanDictionary.com include 'people mountain people sea,' a literal derivation of (), a term used to refer to large crowds, as well as 'No zuo no die,' a riff off (), that is, if you don't do something stupid, bad things won't happen to you.
It seems implausible that such terms could enter mainstream English parlance. Linguists note that the heyday for linguistic absorption from China occurred before 1950, as can be seen in the spellings of certain loaner words-kowtow, gung ho, ketchup-many derived from non-Mandarin Chinese languages such as Cantonese.

[270 words]

[Time 6]

Though there are other Chinese terms that are well-known in English, such as bok choy or chow mien, as the Economist's Johnson language blog has pointed out, '[English-speaking countries] borrowed the foods, and their Chinese names merely hitched a ride into English.' The same could be true of another-by now-commonly known Chinese term, feng shui.

By contrast, China has adopted plenty of English words, each given its own transliterated characters-ku for cool, yimeir for email, leisi for lace, wutuobang for Utopia. Other terms used in China are the same ones that have been exported in English around the world: 'okay, bye bye, man.'

On the English side, resistance to Chinese words doesn't seem to be a simple difficulty of pronunciation: though Mandarin's different tones may be daunting, the basic syllables are easy enough, and the trickiness of French or Japanese pronunciation (coup d'etat, karaoke) hasn't stopped English from embracing words from either language.

And there are plenty of words that would seem ripe to jump the Pacific: Here at China Real Time, one particularly accessible term, mafan-meaning a hassle, or difficulty-could be easily adopted by English speakers (and in fact already has been by many on staff). And who could resist the roll-off-the-tongue ease of mamahuhu, a term that means 'so-so'? (The literal translation is 'horse horse tiger tiger.') Maybe, as some theorize, it's just a matter of time, as China's reach grows, and exchanges continue to deepen.

English adopted few Chinese words in its language. But recently some hot prhases were adopted in Urbandictionary, such as No zuo no die. But there are 8million words in this dic, only 23000 words are put in Oxford Dictionary. These kind of words does not seem likely to go into English parlance.

1950, there were some Chinese words adopted in English, most of them non-mandarin.Then, some words such as chow mien, dim sum, fengshui, have become English words.
On the opposite side, many English words are inclued in Chinese language, Byebye, Ok.
Reason why Chinese words are less likely to be concluded in English? Prononciation is not necessarily a key reason. And as the country grow stonger and is open to the world, more mandarin words will become English words.

1 Young players are going to help the team gain success even though veterans are still the major contributors according to the fashion.
2 it was the injuries in knees that made it unlikely for Arenas to play the game rather than the gun incident.
3 The management  style of MJ made it less possible for KB, who's a teenager player without any potential, to play the game well.
4 D.C is no more a basketball town
5 “Wizards” is actually not a terrible name.

In honor of the 10th anniversary of Friends, I decided to determine which of the six friends were the closest. However the six principal players shares evenly screen time. Then I decided to check their shared lines on the transcripts of all 236 episodes. Even not perfect enough but the most sound method in practical.
3.2'28"
The possible arrangements of six characters are 63. Some combinations are more common than others for the reasons we can infer.+2 examples.  The outcast: Phoebe seems owns the lowest degree centrality score.
4.1‘26“
The most popular friend is Rachel. The most closest friends combination is all fix figures together. The most popular couple are Ross and Rachel, followed by Chandler and Monica. Appeal readers to do their own inquiry about Friends.
5.2'12"
English is notoriously for borrowing words from other languages.
Chinese entries nowadays has step into the UrbanDictionary.com, such as"U can U up, no can no BB", "No Zuo No Die".
The heyday for linguistic absorption from Chinese occurred before 1950 with most words derived from non-Mandarin Chinese such as Cantonese.
6.2'08"
Chinese food names merely hitched a ride into English when borrowed by English countries. BUT. China adopted plenty of English words.
Pronunciation is not the main factor prohibiting English embracing Chinese words. Maybe it is just the matter of time, as China's reach grows, and exchanges continue to deepen.

PART 2:
Time 2: 1:59.43
Today is the ten years anniversary of friends series which is started on May, 6th, 2004. I want to find out which one in the six friends is closest to another one. But I find that the writer distributed nearly equal time to the six principle characters. Joey has the most time, which shows up 47%. Pheobe has the shortest time, which shows up 41%. Does the equal scene time mean every friend is closed to others equally? I downloaded transcripts from the fan site. And I suppose that one character has a line, which means he or she has appeared one time. This method may not be very proper, but  it is sound enough.

Time 3: 2:02.17
There are 63 kinds of combinations of six characters in friends. I found that J, P, M, C are always show in one scene ,yet R and R have more their own scenes together.
Other combinations of friends were much less common. There was only one scene that J, P, M, R appeared together without C and/or R.
Phoebe has the lowest rate to be together with others, however, Ross has 58 times that he is left out from the others.

Time 4: 1:10.24
According to the statistician, Rachel has the highest degree centrality score. Ross and Rachel, Chandler and Monica, these two pairs appeared much higher than other combinations. In addition to the paring, Joey and Chandler has more scenes than others.

Time 5: 2:01.68
English is a language that has borrowed many things from other languages. But it does not borrow many things from Chinese.
But nowadays, there are some Chinese entries appeared in UrbanDictionary.com.

Time 6: 1:46.52
English has borrowed many food's names from Chinese.
In Chinese, there are many words coming from English.
Yet in English, there are fewer Chinese words. Maybe it is because of the pronunciation of Chinese. But the same problem also happens in French and Japanese, which does not influence the borrowing words from these two languages.

PART 3:
Time 7: 9:11.67

1. Wizards is a young team built for long-term success. The median age of NBA player this season is 26.5. Yet Wizards's players are older than that.

Why English Doesn't Borrow Much From Chinese

Time 4 5 6
English is notorious for introducing words from other languages but few from Chinese
Too many words in UrbanDictionary.com where a Chinese entry is collected
Many words were from non-mandarin Chinese
Others are directly from things new to the Western
But China has introduced more from English
Not only because of the difficulty of pronunciation
