OG89


89.   A recent national study of the public schools shows that there are now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were four years ago.


(A) there are now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were


(B) there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were


(C) there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there were


(D) every thirty-two pupils now have one microcomputer, four times as many than there were(C)


(E) every thirty-two pupils now has one microcomputer, four times as many as                      


大家爭論已久且用了很多帖子但還是無定論的答案
there were後面到底指誰?computer?pupils?比例?
終於在ETS的回覆中有結果了


這是台灣一個論壇裡 "魚"nn好不容易千催萬催才問來的
我只是分享出來~所以不是我的功勞喔!!

嗯 各位大大 在事隔很久很久之後.....

中間還發生了 我寫了兩封信去催 "一踢A死"告訴他們偶沒有收到回信

今天 收到 ETA屎的來信了

Thank you for your message concerning question 89 in the Sentence Correction
section of The Official Guide for GMAT Review. You indicated that you did
not understand why the corrected sentence used the plural verb "were"
instead of the singular "was."

The corrected sentence reads as follows:

A recent national study of the public schools shows that there is now one
microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there were
four years ago.

In the sentence, the word "microcomputers" is omitted as understood after
"four times as many." Since the plural noun "microcomputers" is the implied
subject of the verb, the verb must be plural (were) and not singular (was).

We appreciate your having taken the time to let us know about your concern.
Inquiries such as yours help us to maintain and improve the quality of the
GMAT.

 結論:as many as there were microcomputers for pupils four years ago

可是看了ETS官方回覆覺得更奇怪了~~ 前面是...there is now one microcomputer... 這個還比4年前多四倍喔! 那為什麼後面的microcomputer是複數?? 前面都用 is... microcomputer..了,後面是前面的1/4可是卻用了 were microcomputers... 這不是很怪嗎? 還是我哪裡有了迷思呢? 請各位NN指點~~

偶觉得解释是对的。偶的理解是:现在是32人一台,四年前是128一台,现在是原来的4倍,但是,这是个全国性的调查(未划线部门给出的信息)所以:

四年前不可能有只有一台电脑,也不会只有128个学生,当然都得用复数了.

再进一步,现在平均每32个人用1个计算机(单数),是4年前12800个学生用100个计算机(那时候)的四倍,这里的“计算机”和“学生”是不是还得用复数呢?
