Issue 3

"A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer."

The speaker claims that the nation should unify the curriculum of the whole country instead of letting different parts of the nation make their own decisions.
I agree with the speaker’s opinion to some extend because there’s surely some advantages come from this kind of idea. Firstly, there’s lots of elementary knowledge that all the citizens should be familiar with. For instance, there’s hardly any reason for a normal adult in our country doesn’t know how to read or write. Also, we should be taught how to behave appropriately in the public by our teachers at the very beginning so that we will be accepted smoothly by the society when we gradually grow up. It is these kinds of basic knowledge that should be taught to all of us so there’s no need for us to distinguish them in different part of the country. Secondly, unifying the curriculum makes it easier for the government to arrange the education process and assess the achievement in different parts of the country. If there is a gap referring to educational quality in different areas, we will be aware of it in no time and try to find some solutions to cover it .From this perspective it improves the equity and quality in education. What’s more, unifying the curriculum makes the researchers all around the country concentrate on only one project so that the improvement will be made in a more effective way.
However, in spite of all the advantages above, there are still some bad aspects of this proposal. To begin with, when a system is too big and wide, it is considerably hard for us to make a move in reforming. Every little change will be considered again and again in order to forbid making any mistakes, which refers to the revised edition of the textbook does not suit several areas in the country and things like that. And the government will be more prudent in exploring the new teaching areas because if they fail, the unwilling consequences will spread all over the country. As a result, the whole education system will gradually ossify.
So, all in all, we should find a balance here. It’s acceptable for us to learn something from the universities, whose curriculums contain both required courses and selective courses. We can give freedom of designing their curriculums to different part of the nation on the premise that some basic causes should be contained in all of their arrangements.
