Should universities require every student to take avariety of courses outside the student’s field of study, as the speaker claims? I agreewith the author’s view, takes a variety courses outside their field of studywill help students long-term development. But if enforce student study outside of their field, it will harmful totheir freedom to choice course and education’s essence.
From academic point of view, students studyoutside of their field is helpful to draw on experience and method from otherdisciplines. As society development, interdisciplinary research becomes moreimportant than before. Many subjects canlearn from each other, improving technology development. Moreover, disciplines are becoming more andmore refined, but solving problems should use different knowledge and method.
From personal life point of view, studyoutside of student’s field will help they learn more information and becomeintegrated talent. First of all,students will find their true interest. Fore instance, if a student major in science and he don’t understand art, when hechoose to learn music or painting, he can enjoy the pleasure he neverexperienced. It’s makes their life nomore boring and understand how to relax themselves to avoid over fatigue. In addition, they will make morefriends make life more exciting.
Although there so many advantage, thestatement is too absolute. Universitycan’t request student must take a variety courses outside the student’s fieldof study. Students have the right tochoose education. Education should bepeople-oriented, to the interest of students and cultivated student’s potentialas a core. If university requirestudents must does that, it is harmfully to students development. Because education is expensive, not everystudent can afford it , it will increase the economic burden of students. Besides, the path to acquire knowledge is notthe only. Students don’t have to take courseat class. Classroom teaching has flaws,it require students must at a fixed time and fixed place to study. It’ s not flexible. Except this study method, we can also access knowledgeat library, internet. There is no needto take classroom teaching as single way, because students right will bedeprived.
To sum up, takes a variety courses outsidetheir field of study will help students long-term development. Also, universitycan take variety course for students to choose. If students want to broaden their horizons, they have way to accessinformation. It fit education’s essence: education essence is fair. In this way, it can’t damage students’self-esteem whose economic situation is not good
