People’s attitudes are determined more bytheir immediate situation or surroundings than by society as a whole.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

Are people’s attitudes determined more bytheir immediate situation or surroundings than by society as a whole, as thespeaker contends? I think the speaker unfairly generalizes. In my opinion, whether the influenced exerted by the immediate surroundings is stronger thanthat by society as a whole depends largely on what demographic group we aretalking about now.

From the perspective of the mobility ofpeople, we can divide people into two demographic groups by vocations: highlymobile ones, such as photographers, businessmen, journalists, and socialactivists, and less mobile ones, including farmers, town dwellers, real estateagents and so forth. As for the highly mobile ones, the speaker’s claim may notserve well. Considered the everyday life of a journalists and photographers, who fly over the country, chasing societal focus which indicate the hiddenimpulse of the society while hardly sleep the same bed for twice. It isundoubtedly that their attitudes are shaped more by the social situation as awhole than by their immediate surroundings. It is the same story withbusinessmen and other highly mobile people who seldom care their immediatesurroundings. As for people less mobile who have stayed in one place for atremendously long time, it is hard to imagine that the society as a wholerather than their immediate surroundings, which shape their everyday life. Thehigher the mobility of the people involved, the more likely that the societyhas a more influential impact on their life.

When it comes to the aging standard, we caneasily identify two groups of people who share totally different view about themost important factor that determine their attitudes-children and grown-ups. Asfor children, it is definitely their immediate situation and surroundings thatdetermine their attitudes, which includes their friends, the local fashion, their teachers, and other stuff in their day-to-day lives. As for grown-ups, itis understandably that they concern more about the general economic atmospherein the country, where the best job market will be, which city is famous for itssocial vibrancy and stuff like that. Having more responsibilities and concerns,grown-ups tend to concern more about the far-reaching events taking placethroughout the society and put their decision-making in the context of largergeographical scale in order to include more opportunities.

Besides, there is another category to account, which is the general economic and social level of the society involved. Put itanother way, there is significant differences between people from developedcountries and people from developing countries. For the former, they enjoy amore balanced society which the local development level is similar throughoutthe country and is more likely to be influenced by the society as a whole thanby their immediate surroundings, which, in this case, is basically the same inconvenience and opportunities and so on. When it comes to people in developingcountries, their attitudes are determined more by their immediate surroundings.Due to the unbalanced regional development discrepancies, people lived in majorcities varies greatly from people lived in rural areas as their immediatesurroundings varies more sharply.

In sum, it is cursory to determine which, theimmediate surroundings or the society as whole, exerts more profound impact onone’s attitudes. Before figuring out that question, we must first identify theone we are referring to. After all, in my opinion whether people’s attitudesare determined more by their immediate situation or society should bedetermined on a case-by-case basis basing on their demographic groups.
