标题: SDCAR2010【逻辑入门】(十五)More on Negation
Necessary assumption. Usenegation. I said these two sentences hundreds of times here. If you master thetechnique of negation, you should be able to solve the necessary assumptionproblems easily and pass GMAT with flying colors.

When you negate an answer, just negate it. Try not to turn it into itsopposite. Also, negate either the verb or the quantity, but not both.

To negate an if-thenstatement, negate ONLY the then clause. So "if A, then B" would become "if A, then not B"

Quantitites                                |  Negation
all, any, each, every, always          |  not all, some arenot
most,majority                             |  not most
usually, likely                                |  not usually, not likely
some,many, few                         |  none
sometimes,often, rarely                | never
only one, only once                     |  more than one, none (That's right. Not one = none or more thanone)
exactlytwo                                  |  one, more than two, none (similar to the reason listed above)
no, none                                     |  some

Verbs                                          | Negation
will                                                |  might, might not(Another case of paradox!)
can,could                                     |  cannot
there is,there are                          |  there is not, there are not

I'm quite confused about the 'most, majority    |  not most'
In your previous post, you've mentioned that most meant more than half or all.
is that 'not most' means "less than half or none"?
Hope you can answer my question, thanks in advance.

dear SDCAR~
I'm rather confused by this negation

Verbs                                             | Negation
will                                                  |  might, might not (Another case of paradox!)

Why the negtion of "will" is "might" and "might not" but not "will not".

Thank you!!!

Here, we are talking about logical opposite vs. polar opposite. Will not is the polar opposite of will. "Will" mean definitely YES and inevitably YES! "Will not" means defintely NO and inevitably NO. However, in CR we are talking about LOGICAL opposite. Might and Might not means NOT definitely YES, not certain.

then why boht "if" and "then" clauses have to be negated in contrapositive? contrapositive means we have to negate as well as switch. in both cases, we have to negate.

help~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
作者: sdcar2010    时间: 2011-10-7 20:29
In contrapositive, we want to find a CORRECT statement if the original statement is correct.

In negation for necessary assumption question, we want to find a statement which, when negated, would NOT lead to the orignial conclusion in the end.

标题: 求教否命题和命题的否定
请问SDCAR,negation(logical opposite)是不是就是说命题的否定。而polar opposite则是指完全相反,相当于取补集。

negation与polar opposite的关系跟  命题的否定和否命题的关系   是两回事吧?

THX!

Negation 相当于取补集 or anything BUT (the original statement).

Polar opposite is COMPLETE opposite of (the original statement).
